It's definitely unnecessary.
Ergo, you don't even *need* to wall the whole map off if you want the whole map to yourself. Just make a few 4 to 8 superbases on the outskirts of the map, and monsters will run to them anyways, completely ignoring the rest of the map. It also makes early game defense a lot easier once you get used to this concept, because instead of having to surround your entire starting area with walls, you can just make 4 small defense-oriented bases on each side of the map, a decent distance from your main base. Slap down a pylon and your usual defensive regiment and you're safe.
Adds a lot of flexibility, too. If there's a nice, narrow rock formation that you normally couldn't make use of, now you know that you can and the natives will sprint single-file to their deaths anyways. And the smaller size makes it a lot stronger since there's less surface area for the baddies to get at, while you still have your many ranged options.
Should help greatly with building those small outpost faster
