Is it worth walling the entire map?
New player. I'm noticing the map is fairly small. I'm starting to cover significant portions of the map with bases. And it getting to the point where I'm wondering if I should just wall off the perimeter of the map and leave the interior undefended. Is that a workable strategy? Do monsters spawn in wild areas? Is there something I'm missing? Or is it a good idea if I have the resources and AI cores to pull it off?

Ergo, you don't even *need* to wall the whole map off if you want the whole map to yourself. Just make a few 4 to 8 superbases on the outskirts of the map, and monsters will run to them anyways, completely ignoring the rest of the map. It also makes early game defense a lot easier once you get used to this concept, because instead of having to surround your entire starting area with walls, you can just make 4 small defense-oriented bases on each side of the map, a decent distance from your main base. Slap down a pylon and your usual defensive regiment and you're safe.

Adds a lot of flexibility, too. If there's a nice, narrow rock formation that you normally couldn't make use of, now you know that you can and the natives will sprint single-file to their deaths anyways. And the smaller size makes it a lot stronger since there's less surface area for the baddies to get at, while you still have your many ranged options.

If you want to for fun go ahead, but otherwise not worth the time investment. Riftbreaker is great, but the main issue is that the difficulty is heavily front loaded. The more advanced towers you unlock after the orbital scanner are very powerful and the hardest attacks can be handled easily even with a somewhat small base (If I had to give a size estimate on brutal difficulty with 2x enemy spawns my final base usually takes up less than 10% of the map in the campaign. Of course this all depends on how much you are using (exploiting) the outpost mechanic. Might be interesting to try a no permanent outpost run (you can get all rare resources from farming so permanent outposts shouldn't be strictly necessary, and you can sell the ones required by quests after completion) in which you likely would need a massive base and walling off the entire map could be worth it.

Monsters don't seem to spawn in areas covered by radars, so as long as your entire base is covered they shouldn't spawn inside it, either.

Afaik attacks usually spawn at the edges of the map, so build ur main somewhere center (first spot should be with near recource locations and maybe even with mud and thermal vents) with all the research, ai cores, ammodepots and whatnot and than 8 small bases around the edge with repair towers, energy pylon and whatelse u might need and place the def towers only when attack happens, after attack u can sell them again, over time u can keep those towers and have 8 small fully kitted bases for permanent def

Don't need to wall off the map unless you got majority of critical buildings on HQ map in campaign. Even then, once you get into heavy arty, they just shred everything in existence, though I don't use them much cause makes it too easy.

I've paved an entire map with floor tiles, but I've never bothered to wall it all.
It's definitely unnecessary.

You paved paradise, but did you put up a parking lot?
