Will the waves ever end?

Will there ever be some peace and quiet to build up my main base? Or do the invasion waves keep going forever?

Depends. Are you on Survival or Campaign? If on Survival, they'll end when the clock runs out. After which, you can choose to Continue on the map and the waves will not continue.

If on Campaign, the attacks will continue until you complete the final objective, which is to activate the Rift Station. Then you are given a choice: either go through the portal and end the game, or stay and continue. I personally haven't stayed, so I'm not sure if the waves continue afterwards, but it doesn't really matter because the devs are reworking the end game entirely.
