Will I like this on summer sale?
Cuz I kinda hated it on free weekend.

IDK. On paper it seems like a win but IRL it just has misc. "feel" issues that I'm not loving.

Where is this game headed?

Edit: Is the # of forthcoming DLCs known?

Well, only you can decide if you like it or not-- "eye of the beholder" and all that. For myself, I bought the game full price back during Early Access, while it was still in main development, and even then I felt I'd gotten my money's worth and then some.

Since you say you've tried it a bit and were unsure, but you've still been interested enough to ask the question here, I'd say take the sale price if you can afford it. At least then, the worst case result would be that if you wound up not enjoying it in the long run, at least you hadn't paid full price-- and you might even find that once you've put more time in and adapted to the systems and mechanics, you're having a blast (or at least making a lot of blasts)
The game doesn't magically change when you buy it lol
lets be serious, if you kinda hated it while it was a free weekend, you won't like this after buying on sale. games are supposed to be fun, sure there is a learning curve and all, until you get to enjoy it, but the mechanics don't change much.

i have plenty of games sitting in my library for years that i bought on a wim cuz they were on sale without ever playing... or abandoning after few hours.
its the idea of the "sale" to let you buy more cause you feel like missing out on a good deal.

which is redundant as third party sites usually offer you better deals year round, if steam has no sale.

It was meant humorously.

The literal point is, like I said, it seems by all rights like something I *should* like, so I'm asking if I should give it another chance.

I'd pay $1 for another free 72 hrs...

No new DLCs are planned, as far as I'm aware.

You can actually access the DLC content as part of the base game as well in two specific game modes: Survival and Open Campaign.
Buying the DLC just allows you to access their story-related content in the normal Campaign mode.
no, you didn't vibe with it before why would you suddenly vibe with it now
Let's face it; if I *really* thought it was a lost cause I would have ignored it and I wouldn't be in here. Holding out hope, I guess.

Plus I didn't play MP on FW. Maybe there's a spark there?

After seeing the generally positive tone in all your comments, I'd now say go for it if the sale price isn't a major crimp to your budget. Otherwise, it's sounding like the question is going to continue weighing on your mind. ;)
