Advice on research order
Could use some advice on good research order priorities. I'm finding the research a bit overwhelming as a new player. Any advice, vague or detailed would be appreciated.

Focus on the items weapons that you know that you will uses. I would start with the basics. A lot of second level building start needing a rare resource. I normally focus on one rare resource branch at a time. I would suggest researching items that take that resource. I normally start with the Acid biome to get Palladium which lets me build better power plants as everything needs power. So if it take a resource that you are not going for, don't make it a top priority. I also like to set up an outpost on the first mission area there. So a lot of level 1 items are good to just go ahead an research as they don't require a rare resource.

most important thing for me was upgrading clean energy sources, but you can't do that immediately, get the weapons you think you will like, never used more than one melee weapon at a time and at the start i just made a shotgun since it uses different ammo from the small machinegun you start with

make sure to research and make one explosive weapon, as there will be enemies resistant to all your starting weapons i recommend the rocket but if you're more of a grenade type of guy sure
also the hammer also does the same damage type as explosive weapons if you like that

The melee that I went with was the sword and spear. Sword is a wider area and quick. Except for the new DLC area, very few enemies were resistant to cold damage. So Spear gave both reach and slowed enemies.

I didn't bother with shot gun, I went with either Machine or Minigun. I would also just use the blaster on small groups since it didn't take any ammo. Using ammo does cost resources to replace.

Also remember that some research requires you to upgrade your HQ to develop it. Every time that you up that you upgrade, you will get a swarm of enemies attacking you. So make sure that you have research and built the buildings and gear to defend against it.

Speaking campaign here. If you don't rush the game, you will have time to research most of the stuff.

Thanks for the tips. I think it got me off on the right foot.

I googled around a bit and nobody ever seems to mention the powerfist for a melee weapon. I was using that a lot because it has a "life steal" effect which I assumed was good. What are the drawbacks of the fist, compared to the melee you guys use (sword/hammer/spear)?

The powerfist have are fast but have short range. One you get some higher tier melee weapons you can add mods then enable life steal. The big difference is the range. It keeps you can normally kill enemies before they get to you. So there wouldn't be a need for the life steal. When some creatures die, if you are too close, you will get damaged. Spear keeps you out of the range. Sword does too for some.
