Is the laser sword broken?
What must I do to release the research?

On completion of metal terror you should gain all blueprint tiers for the laser sword, currently there is no way to do the research
I think they might remove the research since the laser sword is granted as an award so the blueprints stay unlocked on the profile across campaigns and survival

You get the Laser Sword for completing the DLC. I am uncertain how useful it is. It sets what it hits on fire. This includes plants. I think burned plants don't drop resources. So you don't want to go chopping up plants like you do with a normal sword.

Plants drop resources and this sword has better range and speed, so far it's the best melee wrapping in the game.
