So how are you dealing with the groups of 30 sludge monsters launching explosives at you from 4 screens away completely untouched because your couple of artillery turrets decide to attack the thousands of weak melee enemies? Oh and I only *just* got HQ level 3 so I only have level 1 towers available.
take it slow my dude
layered defense + personal intervention :)
TL:DR of my response boils down to "Git Gud"
Im currently at Day 102. It wasnt until I beat the game last night did I finally "Struggle" to survive. On each map, I spent quite a considerable time exploring, looting all the hidden geo-caches, investigating whatever those minable egg looking things are, and just exploring the map. And I want to stress: on EVERY map. I took my sweet sweet time amassing 20 hours into the game running around and having fun. I've completed all of the research entirely, and upgraded my rig. I can still solo probably 1 or 2 of the Horde entry points without help from any of my turrets. The enemies arent all that difficult to deal with and CERTAINLY are not any issue at HQ level 3. Either you are not constructing proper defenses, or doing so in such a way that leaves too much of your base exposed at once.
Diversity in this game is your friend. you wont get very far if you stick to one source of power, damage, or ammunition.
Side note, I do not believe *at all* that waves increase the longer time goes on. I believe it is directly tied to your HQ level. The game even mentions about there being more stronger attacks when you do.
2. If you rush, for example Titan, then you will find yourself and your main base DEAD as those lava region mobs , that are near imune to explosion damage, will spawn frequently.
So no, dont rush, keep ya time as you then outpower the waves as you have , most likely, railguns AND laser ready prior to them even being a thing! Energy is the only , mostly (90%), reliable damage type in the game. Most foes are hightly resistent against physical, explosion and heat, yet energy? You will at least do 50% dmg, wich is still enormus, against the most powerfull of foes. Shure there are energy resistent beings , yet they die first artilery wave. Would be nice to add things like kryo towers or accid ones so there would be at least some variety in lategame defenses (atm. its railgun, laser, normal, AS MUCH FRACKING ARTILERIE AS YOU CAN HANDLE AMMO WISE)
Is it so difficult to walk around with your robot and assassinate them from being? They are pretty vulnearible.
Thats funny given my turret composition is virtually the exact opposite. I have mostly T3 Guardian Sentries, Flamers, Rocket and a few artillery here and there.
But you're definitely right about needing proper defense. You can't just slap down a couple turrets and leave it. You have to keep upgrading and adding to it. Double those walls up, triple or quad them if you feel like you need to. Spam some turrets at high activity points. And most of all, don't forget those repair towers so they'll keep the walls repaired.
My strategy is moreso: Chokepoints. The AI seems to go for whatever is currently closest to their spawn locations. So I have small extrusions of defenses that stick out from my actual base. They seem to target those first, focusing on THE most heavily fortified part of my base, instead of the 1 tile thick wall with absolutely no defense towers about 30 or so blocks away.
Repair Towers certainly helped a lot, but I was not even aware of Shields until I attempted to open the Rift back home... Game changer. And the fact that they run off of plasma, which is the byproduct of the fusion reactors? Piece of cake.
