the node for the quest should be marked on the map with a yellow area to search in. After that you need to go to a different map and build a second base there to mine more cobalt.

It's just great that you can spend the cobalt on something else, not realizing that it's limited to just a bit more than you need for the quest. Guess I have to go deconstruct everything until I get enough back then re-build stuff later when I get more. That's what I get for not following the quest perfectly. It would be nice if the game warned you or only let you build what you need if that's the only way to progress but I guess learning the hard way will make me stick to constructing quest buildings exactly when the game railroads me into doing so.

Excuse me sir. Do you have a moment for us to share a message from our lord and savior, Cultivator buildings?

That is kind of not true. As soon as you learn cobalt hadling, it will start to drop from flora and fauna (including neutral creatures). Some enemies frequently drop rather substantial amounts.

That being said, any deviation from railroad still smells like catastrophe.

it is one of the first tier techs, unlocked from the start of the game. So unless mods have changed things, you should have access to it. It also unlocks the geoscanner.

You can derail your game however you like, but two extremely important researches are

1. Cobalt Handling, available when you can build comm hub at HQ lvl 2, right next to HQ lvl 3 research.

2. Alien Research, available when your HQ is lvl 3. This will allow scanning and acquiring upgrade mods.

Alpha and Ultra Canoptrix and Hammeroceros drop plenty of Cobalt once you get that research done.

Other than these two researches, I'd recommend getting a Sniper Rifle and stuff all the AoE mods in there and watch as you delete a huge line of red dots on the minimap with each full charge.

Old thread but new question.
Do note that once you have researched Cobalt Handling, you will be told where the only cobalt node is in your HQ map. You go there (circled spot in minimap) and search a bit with geoscanner. Mr. Riggs will have to mine the ore if you do not have Rare Element Mining researched (totally fine to do that, you only need 500 for Orbital scanner, I mine up 1000 just in case).
Then after Rare Element Mining is researched, you'll get the Cobalt Mining Outpost mission.

In general as soon as you get a mission that introduces a new material, you'd be crazy not to go all in on it - so many upgrades and techs are locked behind rare minerals.
