Do you expand the entire base or set up outposts?
I'm unsure which, since I play a ton of factorio, I'm kinda starting off playing similar, but there are some things that seem odd/lacking. Like do I need to expand my base over the entire map? Because building outposts seem impossible, since hordes come from the edge of the map every few minutes, they wipe out any outposts along their way, and it's an outpost you can only have like a couple of small turrets there?

I do outposts so far. Heck, I've even got outposts that are basically nothing but a Geothermal plant encased in walls with 10 defensive turrets of various types and 1 repair drone station.

So far, none of the outposts have fallen. Although I'm always actively participating in the attacks, I don't know how well they'd do without me...

I tried having two outposts, and within minutes both got wiped out, cos I can't be everwhere at once. Also how would the energy work? You'd need to have cable going all the way back to base? That can also be destroyed can it not?

Are you playing Survival or Campaign? It sounds like Survival which IS very different... I only roll with major bases in Survival.

I DO have outposts, but they are disposable mining platforms - just give them walls or double thick if I can spare the resources at the time so I get as many resources from that spot as I can - then while they're munching on that base I can deal with other waves coming for the main base instead of having multiple waves from multiple directions crashing my base at one time...

And yes, you do gotta extend power connectors. Xenos seem to ignore them so far, I only ever see them get ruined via splash or natural hazards.

primary main base well protected at every side and corner , but if some ressource starts to run out i partiacially expand my main base and create fortified outposts , and in some cases i just build a few ressource extraction with a bit of energy and a abttery

I start with making one relatively 'large' main base, which is later getting expanded with additional storage and power generation (turned out I needed to account for the liquids, but I'll just replan the layout later), with the main map littered with multiple outposts with excessive power production, just in case. Though you will later need to expan to other areas as the meager carbon and iron deposits won't sustain you for long (7 hours and half of the deposits are gone, while my appetite is getting bigger). It is also possible to make a massive factory filled with wind turbines and solar panels, with occasional geothermal or gas plant, depending on whethether you have vents and/or sludge available, and later, fusion reactors, that would sustain the power hungry synthesizers for infinite production of carbon and iron, which would allow you to ignore their deposits entirely, focusing more on the 'rare' resources.
Anyway, outposts early-mid game, small scale sci-fi factory late game. Just make sure your HQ, armory and research facilities are separated from the rest of your base.

Regarding wires, it's possible to connect every outpost, but the connectors have little to no hp, and bugs tend to target them if they're in the way, even if I am right in front of them, with walls behind me and turrets raining death. Not to mention there is always one bomber beetle out there just sending it's balls with enough love to give my mech a diabetes... and ruin my spice extractors.

If you're not already doing it, put a Rift Portal at an outpost, that way you can easily get to it if you need to defend it. Also makes getting around the map faster in general. Plus you can put extra walls (not fully encircling it, but rather in alternating layers) farther out from the outpost's walls to slow the enemies down and give the outpost's turrets (and you) more time to fight them.

Nah I'm playing campaign.

1 mainbase as much in middle as possible

surround mainbase with self sufficient outposts

Miners
2 wind and solar and energy storage
double or triple walls
1 to 3 turrets
rift portal if far away

the moment you get geothermal turn those into mini bases as well

the mini bases surrounding your main give enough time to portal to help defend if needed

I did a Big land grab in the middle of the map and liberally have rift portals everywhere to get around.
Then i build small outposts of just energy, miners and walls to hoover up patches, again with rift portals going everywhere.

for me i put some outpost for geo and resource but since i need more space gradually the outpost became the part of the main base since i am starting to put more stuff near outpost like ai core, storage etc.

so far it work great for me and the beast havent breach the wall yet.

i go for map control. if you place radar it seems to stop enemies respawning and you can clear it all. the downside is i need to keep a number of AI cores floating as attacks can come from anywhere on the perimeter and i need to hope i already have defences at that point or quickly make em. on the plus side i have access to nearly the full map of resources.

ive left the aliens with the top third. dont want them to say i didnt try and share you know...

Unsure about survival as i havent played that yet. Couple key points for campaign;
- Enemies come from the outer walls of the map and head to the closest structure/building.
- This allows you to make a centralized, large, unwalled base as long as you have 'bulwarks' for the enemies to hit first.
- These should be self contained with their own power generation and storage +AI cores for turrets and aoe repair building +radar, then add turrets as you want.

Walls along the build limit, alllll the way around the map. Turrets, turrets, and more turrets.

Next stop, building a wall around the entire planet!

It's just considering what the game says, that creatures respond to the energy frequencies and it upsets them and the bigger the energy the more it agrivates them, it makes no sense for them to attack the closest structure whether it has energy or not, they should always head for the section with the largest amount of energy generation and use

that would make sense, and then i'd be cool to have towers that basically taunt enemies to their position as well
