I have researched all I can and am at the Rift Station mission but I have a ton of things to still research blocked behind mission objectives. How do I get these? Are they locked behind DLC? Will familiarity with certain plants unlock all of them eventually?

there are several from scanning plants and animals, 3 from completing the titanium, palladium and uranium mining outpost missions, and some from the DLCs

If you highlight over it it will show you if it unlocks from a mission or scanning, if scanning it will show what it wants

Yes certain things require you to scan a creature and plant types a couple of times. Others require you to progress in the DLC. Some are also unlock by completing the DLC.

Yeah, i see that some need familiarity but most need mission objectives. It's annoying that the tech tree is cluttered with stuff that needs dlc I don't own. I have done all missions except the final one.
