You need to learn "... handling" tech to farm stuff. "Hazenite handling" in this case.
Did you finish "hazenite concentration" mission?
Maybe there was a glitch when I did the mission for it early on in the game.
To get Hazenite handling quest, you need to first scan those yellow exploding plants enough times. Once you do, Ashley and Riggs will have a convo about it, then you'll get the mission to go harvest 500 of it, after you harvest that 500 the handling skill will be unlocked for research. You do not need to do the second mission involving those submaterials. That mission basically teaches you that cultivators and harvesters are your gods. As they can plant plants that literally grow every material in the game.
You can even get some like titanium and Ferdonite plants long before you unlock titanium, however, you have to have the handling skill before they will harvest those mats from it (you also need to visit the place its at to enable it after learning the research). By the end of my brutal campain I had like 3 zones nothing but grow plots. 1 cultivator can be surrounded by 4 harvesters and still plant enough stuff that there is always going to be plants for them to harvest.
[Edit] So I returned to the tropical biome and scanned a tree, then the quest came up. *sigh* I can't believe I missed that and have played almost to the end. Easily missed I guess. There's just so much going on... Suffice it to say, I am now researching Hazenite Handling and will be able to harvest the crystals I have been growing for the last 30 hours of game-play. Lol.
