Puppet Emperor Randomly Relocated?
https://imgur.com/NWmKDVG

I managed to take over Luoyang in year 187 and claimed the emperor. However Sun Jian somehow managed to vassalize the Han Empire along with relocating Emperor Xian to southern china??? What the ♥♥♥♥? Is this a bug? How the hell can he claim Xian when I hold Luoyang???

It's a feature that has been this way since the beginning and it doesn't make any sense. Iv even rescued him as his uncle and he still left to live with distant relatives, rather then his own family.

I don't think it's a horrible event, but it happens way too often.

Especially when I had his uncle marry his mom and welcomed a newborn son shortly after. I guess he got jealous lol

That's not true. The mechanic where the emperor will "randomly" escape from the player to another faction was added in the 1.4.0 patch alongside Mandate of Heaven.

Previously the only way the emperor moved around was if someone captured the capital city of the current regent of the Han.

Besides the scripted events in the A World Betrayed campaign where the emperor bumps around from Li Jue to Yang Feng to Cao Cao, I have never seen the emperor escape from an AI faction.

It appears to be a purely anti-player mechanic.

It can escape from AI factions. If the AI holding the emperor is at war with another faction, and it keeps losing until its faction strength is weaker than one of the other factions in the game (including player controlled factions), then the emperor has a chance to escape. The mechanics might be wrong here but this did happen a couple of times in my game, in different play through of course.

I guess I've just been mostly unlucky then. Or the emperor tends to flee me and go to the safest, most secure factions without any active wars.

I've had it happen to me three times in a single campaign once. It was quite comical.

I rescued the emperor from Dong Zhuo as Liu Biao. After a few turns, he fled to Cao Cao. So I sieged down Cao Cao's capital and took him back.

He stayed for three turns and then went to Gongsun Zan. So I sent my vassal (Liu Bei) to attack Gongsun Zan's capital and he delivered the emperor back to me.

Two turns later, the Han then fled to Lady Wu.

By that point, it was already getting close to the endgame, so I stopped chasing him.

I've recently created a mod to stop this since I got tired of it myself:
