Red Cliff 2008
The Lost Bladesman 2011
The Assassins 2012

Play Dynasty Warriors. The character designs are EXTREMELY memorable, and you will easily be able to remember faces for the names.
The Three Kingdoms are run by Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and Sun Jian/Ce/Quan.
Liu Bei is the good guy.
Cao Cao is the bad guy.
Sun Jian/Ce/Quan is the awesome guy.
And Lu Bu is the OP edgelord self-insert character.
TV Show: "Three Kingdoms (2010)" My favorite adaptation in cinematic form, it has a great cast and performances. At times it deviates slightly from both the novel and history, but even then it is very fantastic. It covers all the major events of this period starting just before this game's starting point. Can be found on YouTube. Legality is another question entirely.
Movie: "Red Cliff" Try to watch the 4 hour international version (a.k.a. Parts 1 & 2). It is a historical epic about the battle of Red Cliff (also known as Battle of Chi Bi) which is a playable historical battle in the game. Can be rented from most movie sites like YouTube and Amazon as far as I know.
Anime: "Yokoyama Mitsuteru Sangokushi" Relatively short anime about 47 or 48 episodes that follows Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei (and all the supporting characters that cross their paths) up until the Battle of Red Cliff. I believe this one is available on Crunchyroll. You can also find it other places if you know where to look.
Other honourable mentions:
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (1994) - Television show almost just as good as Three Kingdoms 2010, a little harder to find in good quality with English subs.
Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the The Dragon - a contemporary of Red Cliff, its a film about the life of Zhao Yun, a sentinel hero for Gongsun Zan in this game, who spent the majority of his life serving Liu Bei.
The Lost Bladesman - A movie about Guan Yu, based on the fictional story of Guan Yu and the Five Passes, where Guan Yu fled from Cao Cao and passed five checkpoints and slew six officers.
There's a lot more than this, but it should get you started.
If games are more your speed, honestly Dynasty Warriors 7 or 8's story mode will get you very familiar with a lot of characters and key events pretty quickly if you like those kinds of games.
but, if you are interested, you can also watch a tv series called "three kingdom (2010)"
i personally watch that show and there you can see the war in each of the characters perspective and it's very good to see the chemistry behind these characters and faction leaders and how they behave (even tho of course some character are potrayed as the evil and the other potrayed as the just or good)
you can watch it on youtube btw, there's someone who upload like a lot of episodes of it even back from 2013
