Dogs being particularly fierce in Lovecraft seems to come from Lovecraft being a little afraid of of them. I mean, he was afraid of most things, but dogs are the angry mob of the animal world, sometimes able to win through brute force, but ultimately still sort of on the losing side because they're dull and afraid. Definitely more of a cat person.
Death of Wilbur by dog was surprising to me, as he is a son of yog sothoth, the leader of the Outer God. I expect the son of such high entity should have peculiar physical and psychic ability, so I interpret the death of Wilbur by a dog as Wilbur's weakness towards dogs. I cannot recall which book, but I remember, Migo is also killed by a dog. I also think this can be considered as a weakness of Migo towards dogs.
Regarding Eldar things, maybe you are right. It was too long time ago that I read Mountains of Madness last time, my memory might incorrect. I know Eldar things killed humies and doggies as a retaliation, and as a food source. I thought I read something like Eldar things were reluctant towards dogs but I maybe wrong here.
With the mi-go, is that an expanded mythos thing? In The Whisperer In Darkness, I thought it was mostly them killing the dogs rather than the other way around.
I think it was Whisperer In Darkness. Migos did killed some dogs, but eventually they couldn't get in to Akeley's house because of dogs, wasn't it? Well, I obviously may be wrong, my memories are faint as I read those books 5~7 yrs ago.
