How complete is this game, please?
The developers wrote in a news post a couple days ago that the game will be incomplete upon release. From the news post:

"At some point in the production, I was obliged to make a tough decision (like any good RPG): rushing the last chapter, breaking the pace of the game or complete it on a cliffhanger and leave some space for future installments.

Stygian is not a short game and it definitely can not be categorized as episodic, since it is teeming with content; but I have to state that we won't be solving all the mysteries at the end of this game. Going the other way would have spoiled some really good scenes, characters and situations for the sake of having just a closure. For better or for worse, I thought you needed to know that."

This is a bit concerning. Could someone please elaborate on what corners were cut? Is there an actual, satisfying ending? How many loose ends won't be tied up?

The game looks fabulous, but if it's not fully complete I would like more information about that.

Thanks!

Hello everyone, to shed more light onto the whole "the game is not complete" issue. The game is complete. It has beginning and end. Majority of character arcs as well as story lines have beginning and end, however the overarching story itself ends on a cliffhanger. It is true that the game has 15+ hours of gameplay but it is also highly replayable due to decisions made during dialogue, gameplay and of course different combinations during character creation that also change how your experience your time in the city of Arkham. The whole story as developer already stated is 50+ hours but being completely honest here for an indie studio with limited resources to make a 50+ hour game that is a quality one, in a timely manner is close to impossible...

Hello FroBodine,

The main story arc of the chronicle will not be completed but (without giving spoilers) if we had completed that, we would never be able to make another Stygian game and we have more stories to tell and more places to explore before we are done with our doomed Arkham.

I hope I was able to enlighten you on the matter without messing with your potential game experience :)

Best!

That sounds very worrying. I can understand a few side things being left ambiguous or incomplete, but the main story?

Yep, they seem to be dancing around this issue a bit. All this time in development, and they are releasing an incomplete game?

Is there even an ending with some closure to this version that is releasing tomorrow?

Quote from the post: "The complete saga that I had written would have lasted around 50 hours to complete but we were trying to achieve a 15-20 hours experience with a lot of re-playability."

So we basically only get the first half of the story...

It's not often i hear a developer straight up say "we're cutting our game in half for more of your money." Thanks for telling me that you're dividing your game into parts when 5 years ago it would have been a complete package. Let me know when your game is a full package and not some glorified demo, then i'll give you my money.

To me, a solid, immersive game-play with a solid story - no matter how long - is much more important than a crappy repetitive game-play with a dull story.
I personally don't want filler quests such as: collect X amount of Y to obtain Z item. Some may like things like that, but then, this wouldn't be a real RPG.
So...we will wait and see ;)

Yeah I have to say, I am pretty pissed that what was advertised as a complete experience will now be just a segment. Honestly, there better be at least some expansion content or a sequel of some kind to finish the story, but I cannot move passed being told that five years ago we would get a complete game and that now we will have to pay for the rest. Five years. How in the hell did they not complete this in that time?

I am excited to play this game, been waiting for it since I backed it, but to know that they are doing this to us is very disheartening.

Yep. This was a must buy until I read that post. Now, it's a probably won't buy. I have plenty of good RPGs to play that are COMPLETE.

Yeah, as soon as I read that announcement I have been skeptical. I would have prefered they never said anything at all. Now I will go in game with that mind - that the main plot might not be solved.

What is the point of playing then? Maybe it dosen't sell enough to warrant a sequel, but even if it is, how many years down the line to see the main quest through?

Nope. It's a very strange comment from the developer.
Gatekeeper Sep 25, 2019 @ 1:16pm
Even the question itself "How complete it is ?" looks a bit funny at this point. The game is not even released yet so nobody played it. It's like trying to evaluate a book/movie before even reading/watching it. Many products - games/movies/books - are published as trilogies, sometimes even more. Just play it and decide for yourself, ok, jeez !
