The bugs dying easy has been a complaint/wishlist for...ever, and the DEVs have said they are working on it. Your Best bet is to COMMAND you bug to stay at your base....every time you log in......and when you need it, use the whistle, and then find a safe spot nearby to park him again. Repeat as needed
I haven't heard of whistling a dead bug back to life, but if it works...then more power to the necromancer that thought of it.
If you get a message saying it's been released. That means it's dead. The original poster said it got released and that its happened multiple times.
I suggested a best practice (which you can find numerous of posts of this recommendation from several different users) of parking your bug at your base or safe spot and use the whistle to call it....until the DEVs come up with something that maybe helps keep them alive, in a future update.
However, if you say that whistle sometimes brings them back AFTER being released, then I'm saying that it's worth a shot. If you're simply saying if your bug is NOT released and it's on a walk about, then using the whistle is supposed to bring it to you from wherever, which is also a part of the best practice.
Again, my point is simply to follow current best practice and don't take chances with the bug getting attacked or something that ends up getting the bug killed. I've heard of bugs drowning, or a bridge glitch that causes them to die.
PS:
Mine could have been a glitch with the lift transport up the tree. The Ladybug was there until I entered the lift. I got the message after the lift was at the top of the tree, and the Ladybug didn't follow.
I would try to avoid the chance of the bug dying and carefully park it....till you need it and then park it again.
Your's could be a glitch and I'm glad that it worked out for you. If that's the case, I would still try the whistle every time the message appears and hope that it does come back....and if it does, then spread the word as a tips and tricks.
ps: im on peaceful mode, its probably not the same on the other mode
in my case it wasnt my ladybug.
two times my grasshopper has died from unknown means. it always happen after i use the whistle. if i remember to put them in stay after then they never die, but if i dont then next time i get off for more than a few seconds then they gets 'released'
last time there was no enemies around it beside the frog on the other side of the pond that i was shooting it (too far for it to run so it never even got close enough to attack me)
i had the back towards my pet both times so i never saw it
edit: i will say though my pet was behind me and there was no water behind me, also when it is set to follow the pet tends to go closer to you rather than further away from you. the only thing i can think of is if the pet runs away from you if you start a battle but i dont know if that is even a thing in this game. from what i hear though, it is not
I tamed a new one and within 5 minutes, I crossed a small pond via lily pads and it was immediately released. I feel like it might have drowned itself???
Either way, I think there must be a better way to go about it. Maybe give a warning first that gives you a minute to use the whistle and call them to you so they aren't immediately and spontaneously lost and losing all the items it was carrying.
