BioShock
Is the Bioshock: Rapture novel worth the time?
Since The Bioshock Collection is coming out in around 8 hours... and also because I was at a bookstore just a while ago and saw the book... who here has read "Bioshock: Rapture" by John Shirley? Is it worth the time? Should I read it before or after playing the trilogy? Does its story align perfectly with the narrative in the games?

Thanks!

I could do that if that's what I wanted to do, but I prefer hearing from gamers who are fans enough of the game to hang around this community hub.

Honestly, it's impossible to say if you'll like it. There are tons of people who like it and don't like it. At all.

The book takes place before the first BioShock game, but I'm sure you should read it after playing BioShock 1. The book fills in some gaps you might want to learn more about. I guess it would be a spoiler otherwise.
I have read the book. It gives an great view of how Rapture looked like and the process of the fall of the city. You get to see more of Andrew Ryan, Frank Fontaine, Suchong (Who is aparently a Korean in the book), and all the major characters whom you only heard about in the audio recordings. From the birth of little sisters, ADAM and EVE, all the way to shootout between Ryan and Fontain, it pretty much matches everything you only heard about in the game. There are some chapters which focuses on the citizens and how all of this affects them. This is a great book.

TL;DR: Great book. Go read it

I enjoyed a lot the book, loved how they explained things about the characters and the city that never appeared in the game. If you liked Rapture and the atmosphere, I think you're gonna enjoy the book as well ^^
As a fan of the Bioshock's universe, I really enjoyed the novel written by John Shirley. I recommend you.
Read it after playing the games. I personally thought it was quite good.
I read it and I loved it. It gives a lot of backstory, and all throughout you're filled with this growing dread of "when is the bad stuff gonna happen?" because you already know what happens after the book.
I really enjoyed it. You should give it ago.

I liked it, and I'd say go ahead and get it, but it does drag on a bit in the beginning.
Bioshock fan?

If your answer is 'yes' get the book, I loved it.
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

"BioShock was heavily influenced by Atlas Shrugged, the novel by philosopher Ayn Rand. Rand used Atlas Shrugged to advocate her philosophy of Objectivism which was, in short, a deep belief in the importance and power of the individual. These ideas influenced the art and society of Rapture. Writer Ken Levine noted that Ayn Rand's work is one of a handful of "utopian and dystopian writings of the 20th century,” noting his fascination with them."

Yes it's worthy, at least in my opinion. Good novel for the best of the three games.
It's a great read on it's own, even without having played the games, but knowing all the characters from the game makes it even better. It's really interesting reading about characters that were previously only known through the audio recordings. Adds a lot more depth to the lore.
