If it doesn't help - you may also try to manually change sound settings or disable sounds entirely (in my previous build of this game enabled sounds/music made the game freeze). You can do it either in game (just unchesk three sound buttons on the left side in the settings menu) or by using game setup utility. This, however, may require some skills in using dosbox. You must download and launch dosbox, mount the folder where your XCOMA is placed (in my case $SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\XCom Apocalypse\XCOMA) and launch SETUP.EXE. At least it worked for me in previous (not steam) build.
