No this game is not pay to win.
BUT
over the years i feel like the game its getting harder and harder for new players. Yes premium is a thing but you can easly buy it with silver ( like scouting if your new or doing avas like i do) . Also if you pay with real money some tomes andd gear and head to a black zone i dont mind killing your 8.3 kit to buy premium for me and my friends.
example: one month after the ava rosd update i and a friend were ganking in a green gate connected to a martlock blue zone ; in there we found a guy w a 6.3 ava axe ( super expensive at the time ) and 7.3-8.3 gear, and he had 2,5 mil fame. Me and my friend ( we had swiftclaws and 6.1-5.2 bloodletter and quarterstaff which totaled less than 1.5 mil in gear for the both of us). we dismounted his t8 armoured horse, then he paniked and started running and we killed him. Easiest 25 mil we ever got ( also nearly 4 mil pvp fame).
Just some extra info he had blood letter and a facebreaker with a hel jacket and cult hood , I did not note the rest but overall a solid set up but his lack of skill and understanding of the game just made him a easy pickings
Of course there are examples in the MMO-Industry that are predatory in terms of cash-shops but albion does it just right imo.
Also many people have a lack of knowledge about how running an MMO actually works.
For example.... Black Desert.
The dev´s told everyone that there will be no extra fee to play the game and the whole game finances itself through Gamecopy-Sales only.
Thats a thing that literally isn´t possible for running an MMORPG. There has to be at least a subscription option or a cash-shop otherwise MMORPG´s would die within months.
People that mark albion as a pay2win game probably haven´t played the game for a long time or they´re maybe just impatient.
Yes... you can buy Gold for RL-Money and exchange it to silver or use it for subscription.
You technically can boost yourself in all the talents but there are no talents which can´t be achieved ingame.
You can boost yourself to max. wear the best gear possible but you´re still as vulnurable as everyone else.
Due to the fact that it´s a full loot pvp game it really hurts to lose all that expensive high-level gear and group of organized players can easily overwhelme you allthough they have crap gear.
An example for Albion....
If you move to lets say a tier 8 map equipped with tier 4 gear.
Of course on one hand you´ll get wrecked in a 1on1 situtation engaging a tier 8 equipped player because of scaling. Tier 8 maps (Blackzone) technically have no cap and you only can grow in strength the higher the gear you wear.
On the other hand... lets pretend you equip yourself with full tier 8 gear and you move to a tier 4 (bluezone) or tier 5 (yellow/redzone) map.
You´re gettting scaled back no matter how strong your tier 8 gear might be.
My own conclusion:
Albion is not pay2win in terms of gear strength or advantages you cannot get by playing the game only.
Just because you got wrecked by other player doesn´t mean, that the other one paid more money. This happens to everyone in a matter of time. It´s basically a skillbased game.
But do not get me wrong the game is definitely pay to get ahead and is one the only things I think needs to be changed
