What would you guys recommend to a new player as the best way to get your first weapon tree to 100 spec

The weapon choice really depends on your play style. I personally prefer axes and I've unlocked all the other weapon lines to Tier 4.

You're taking a big risk investing everything into 1 weapon. I did that and Albion nerfed my weapon of choice to the ground over 4 times to the point that it's useless.

You can get a satchal of insight to boost combat fame
You can do green dungeons (yellow+) with the satchal for more fame
Do daily arena for pvp experience and to get tomes of insight.

You can join a guild and do group dungeons and get more combat fame especially with a satchal of insight

Do farming runs and buy tomes of insight (t4)

The list goes on

If you want a cheap and disgraceful way you can buy gold and turn gold into silver to get insight but you need lots and lots of gold

As Flarelight says, the weapon choice really depends on your play style.

Try out all the weapon-types, level them to Adept and see what you like. You get a Steam Achievement for that.

And after deciding which weapon-type you like, within those group there will be 1 or 2 specific weapons that is great and cheap for PvE Fame Farming (e.g. Axe-type: 'Greataxe', Sword-type: 'Carving Sword', 'Clarent Blade', etc.) although some only have "good enough" options, choose 1 and focus on that.

After maxing, use the over-spec combat fame to level other gears.
