Where can I find mushrooms and food items naturally?

I ask cause I want to go into potion crafting and cooking

Also how do I get a fishing rod?

I'm in the desert starting region

You cannot find food items naturally, they have to be grown. You can grow items on a personal island. You can also grow on the main land if you are lucky enough to have access to farm plots, but they are limited and owned by guilds. (You might be able to get food as drops, but I am not certain - Regardless they wouldnt be something you could focus farm)

A fishing rod is made at a toolmaker.

What tier for the fishing rod? And are mushrooms under the same category of food or no?

Mushrooms are considered herbs, not crops. Several items can be interchanged with cooking and potions, though.

You cannot find them, you have to grow them (on an island). The merchant on the island sells the seeds.
