Shader quality

I am not able to switch the shader quality from Ultra to Medium. Ingame the option to switch it is greyed out. I am able to switch it from the launcher menu, but when I actually open the game, it switches back to Ultra.
Well, I thought this was normal (somehow), but a few days ago, I invited a friend to play this game, and when we were setting up his video settings I noticed that he can freely change from Ultra to Medium while ingame.
So that's basically why you're reading this post today (thanks btw).
