I'm not going to pretend to know anything about autism, but I do know a little about Twine, the interactive fiction software which was used to realise this product. Therefore I'm only going to review this game as an interactive novel, and as a sci-fi/fantasy story (which it very much is, even if I suspect there's also a fair deal of analogy I simply didn't "get"). In essence, I'm going to aim to be as "objective" as I possibly can be (wish me luck)!

Firstly, it's quite well written, though not spectacularly so. It's short, but definitely replayable given the wide range of endings and Achievements (it's certainly not an unreasonable price, all things considered). The story is quite trippy and inter-dimensional: The Twilight Zone, with a slightly modernised Y.A. twist. Nothing terribly original, but not bad for all that.

The one notably negative criticism I could perhaps make is its level of agency, which is very low for a piece of interactive fiction. While your choices definitely have consequences, and can lead you on some very different paths, decisions in a single playthrough are few and far between. I'll leave it up to the individual to decide how important this particular factor is for them.

There are, interestingly enough, two versions of the story being offered here, and they're very different. The "remake" is definitely a more adventurous and creative exploration of Twine's technical and creative possibilities, and on the whole I'd say it's the more enjoyable and "accomplished" of the versions on offer. But they're different enough to justify playing through both of them, should you be interested enough. My curiosity, if nothing else, was enough to take me through a couple of quick playthroughs of each, before I simply went back and spammed for any remaining Achievements (since they were easy enough to nab).

I'm not going to lie: this simply wasn't "my thing". I can only assume that it might mean more to those with experience of autism, and I also suspect that it may be of more appeal, overall, to females than to males. (Or, to put it a bit more crudely: it was all a bit "girly" for me). There's certainly no denying that quite a bit of love and personal perspective was put into this project, so it's earnest if nothing else. Beyond that, it's really just a matter of personal taste (like almost everything in this world, really).

Verdict: 6.5/10.

An intelligent remake of “Les Quatre Alices” where we feel more the ASD subtleties of the characters than in the original. Of course, this interactive fiction is short but go straight to the point.

PRO
- Characters development
- The trace seems more relatable than it was in the previous version of the game because it forces our mind to create a realistic image of it. Which makes the story way more enjoyable!
- Despite the detail of ASD, the story is not too heavy, which make it easy to read.
- Multilanguage

CON
- Overly short (You'll complete it in less than one hour)
- Marketing (The marketing focus too much on the fact it was made with the engine Twine instead of focusing on the fact the story is about ASD, which I'm pretty much sure would probably interest which more people if people had a preview of the story orientation instead)

A unique text-based awareness story that makes use of scripting & fonts as a way of highlighting the Alice characters & the choices to progress through the multiple directions within the plot.

The menu has a settings tab to select different colours both in the writing & the backgrounds as well as the choice of fonts. The purpose behind these is not only to suit each player's ideal colour but also to assist for dyslexics.
The menu also has save and restart options for those who want to start afresh (I assume it removes the Achievements otherwise I don't see the purpose of Restart since even if a wrong direction choice was made in the story it isn't a long process to get to the ending?!).

Talking of achievements these are split between the original story version of 4 Alices and the remake that is featured in this version. There are differences between the Original and the Remake both in story rewrites and in a more adventurous use of Twine's features in the Remake. This adds replayability to a game that would otherwise be dismissed as a coffeebreak game.
The music is a simple background effect while the artwork is images taken from the sites mentioned in the Credit section of the Homepage.

Let's get more into the story : the Awareness topic is Autism and the Four Alices each show differing characteristics shown by Autism disorders, this was a clever way to not only showcase the symptoms but also to create game characters who are all seeking the same purpose - escape! The story takes a sci-fi turn to show the ASD's challenges and a backstory featuring Alice in Wonderland reveals the 3 Alice's personal ASD experiences.

I give this a thumbs-up because it is a very simple text-based choose your own adventure that covers a disorder that still to this day isn't fully understood & I feel this game accomplishes more towards understanding ASD than it's given credit for.

Very well written, I honestly wasn't expecting as much. The music actually helps me to focus on the story, sets the mood so to speak, in which I think the developer/writer was trying to capture.

Actually looking forward to reading the rest of Mia's works.
