Overland constantly at war is annoying

All the people on the surface are constantly at war and beating each other up, which means they never have anything to trade. Since you kind of rely on them for hides and lumber (at least at first) it's annoying that they never have any. Why do I have to rebuild these other countries' buildings by selling them granite blocks all the time... only for them to get attacked again and not have anything to trade. Again.

Trading was very useful and interesting when I first unlocked it but now all their fortifications are at low health constantly with nothing to sell, except for the market-looking places that rarely have lumber or hides.

For lumber get woodworking techniques and citadel mushrooms for your farms. For hides, don't destroy the rat holes. They give meat, bones you can use for bone ash and mortar and hides when killed. Otherwise I just ignore the overworld except for when I want some gold for my dwarves.

If you really want someone to befriend in the overworld look for factions who doesn't join an alliance. They seem to be mostly at peace.

Spend the first part of your game making one faction win. Then you dont have to worry about the war anymore and can trade whatever you want, whenever you want, and you can explore the underworld eating slimes all you want!

this. You only need to trade to fulfill greed for your dwarves. For that keep a stock of random weapons, tools and early game pillars to get gold easily.
