Cog Drill?
In short...what does it do and how does it work? I built one just to try but it just sits there.

Also whats the point of the rail carts if you cant build them to move in front of buildings to drop stuff off?

you place the drills over ore veins and they'll harvest automatically.

They are slow to harvest ores but harvest more then if you just mined them out. They do need to be emptied though and only hold so much inventory before shutting down ( unless emptied by dwarves). They do deplete the ore veins but slowly. They are excellent for about whatever ore you need a lot of.

They're the main cause of me needing to build new storage rooms, they produce a LOT of product based on the wall you build them on.

Rail carts are less "move about the base" transport, and more useful when flinging your dwarves wildly across the map to get down to the latest mithral spot, or new gem load. They're MUCH faster than building a bunch of stairs and having the dwarves trundle along.

You can also have several carts on the same track, collision is thankfully not an issue. Remarkable dwarven engineering processes

yeah there's one small issue with the drills: the power switch button doesn't work. You switch them off but they just keep drilling

Put them on rare ores and/or gemstones for best results.
