Does your game crash? If yes, please follow these 5 simple steps.

Basic overview: Manually patch the railroads.exe file, this will stop the game from crashing!
Time to patch: < 5 minutes.
Technical Skill Required: 1st Grade computer level. (Copy and Paste)
Other: CLOSE GAME BEFORE PATCHING!

Step 1.
Download the fix here.
http://www.smrsimple.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/SidMeiersRailroads3GBEnabler.zip

Step 2.
Open the zip file into a temporay directory, and view the README.TXT
i.e. C:\railroad-patch\

Step 3.
Copy the RAILROADS.EXE to this new temp directory. (C:\railroad-patch\ )
Default directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Railroads

Step 4.
Correct the railroads.exe file.
Run file: Startme.bat
A menu will appear. Press A
Then press E to exit the menu. Press E

Step 5.
Copy the RAILROADS.EXE file to the orginal game directory.

Step 6.
Load and Play the game. And be happy.

Seriously this take less than 5 minutes to fix, if you want to play the game you'll need to patch it manually. If you just want to complain, then go outside and yell at the grass for being green.

What does "correct the railroads.exe file" mean?
Couple issues with the README.txt file... take note, I'm not very good at this kind of stuff, but willing to learn!

1.the readme file mentions a few lines about Oblivion, not SM Railroads!
2.readme file only mentions this effective with XP/Vista

I'm just stuck! I don't know what i'm doing... any help is appreciated!

Open the zip file to a temp directory. The readme.txt is just a informational file to help better explain what's going on. Ignore the Oblivion, and replace the words with SM Railroads.

Just to point out... I believe the 3GBenabler is really just a Microsoft app called EDITBIN.EXE. According to Microsoft: "To set this bit, you must use Microsoft Visual Studio Version 6.0 or later and the Editbin.exe utility, which has the ability to modify the image header (/LARGEADDRESSAWARE) flag. For more information on setting this flag, see the Microsoft Visual Studio documentation."
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/Dn613959(v=vs.85).aspx

So if you have any doubt whatsoever (maybe someone created a bogus EDITBIN.EXE and uploaded it to a random website - which is what Steam is trying to protect you against), then you can download all the tools yourself from Microsoft and set the LARGEADDRESSAWARE in the header yourself - just to play it safe.

Visual Studio Express is free and has EDITBIN.EXE included.

I've done that patch and it still crashes when it tries to use more than ~750 MB of ram on the northeastern US Map. I wonder if it's related to having a video card ( GTX 770 ) with 2 GB of ram or running it at 2560x1440
