If you're away from home, it's a cheap structure to build and power. It provides you with protection from the cold at night, a chair to sleep in, the ability to refill an Oxygen bottle, and shelter from weather events. It even comes with a free 3D Printer (with slots you can use as storage).

I usually never leave my main base without the parts needed for a Survival Capsule, 1 battery pack, and either a Medium solar panel or a transformer and a few regular solar panels to charge said battery for overnight power. (The survival capsule only draws 5 kw)

If you can get power to a survival capsule, especially if a rock field or other resources nearby, you can easily build everything else from that, all while having sufficient shelter from all weather (Except meteor storms ofc) and oxygen.
Honestly, I'd rather the capsule have a bed and its own solar power for the oxygenator.

Untruht!

This is pure truth!
Hence the question, why is it needed if it does not provide complete protection? Where then protection from meteorites?

What is so funny about this question is the survival capsule you get at the start of the game, this is where you stay until you get your base built with a bed or living quarters. It is the exact same thing you landed on mars with. It just means you can build it now.

Has anyone ever died in a Survival Capsule during a meteor storm? I've never had one hit a capsule I'm in, but I would have guessed it would damage the capsule rather than destroying it outright.

I usually only bother with a small solar panel to power a capsule. With the door closed it still maintains a survivable temperature inside overnight - which is the main requirement for players until they're pretty deep into the tech tree. Without a battery it won't generate Oxygen overnight and you can't access the printer, but really you only need an hour of sun and you're good to go there.

It's not necessary to change the Survival Capsule with built-in solar panels IMHO, but I wouldn't say no to a small battery, maybe 60kWh. I think that would make logical sense, though it probably needs a display which would be non-trivial dev work.

That's the thing, if I wasn't dying, I wouldn't have created this discussion. There was no trace left of the capsule.

Ah! Good to know! I'd be tempted to call that a bug.

Makes me wonder if any structure is safe in a meteor storm. Perhaps running away really is the only answer?
@Murgen,
I've built plenty of capsules, and they seem to be immune to all storms, except Meteors & Lightning. Although with the lightning it was only partial damage, but a direct hit with a meteor... well, I was toast. :meteor_glitch:

I typically use them the same way WarpedFox stated above.

The only capsule immune to all storms, is the one you start with. I don't think it's a bug. I think it's by design for a "Safe Haven" I could certainly understand the one you build being destroyed by a direct hit from a meteor.

Most likely it was.

Caves protect from everything.
Caves... I have to keep that in mind. It makes sense though, I've just been lucky, and not had a storm come while in one. :westernluck:

I think there's some room for a player-built "Survival Capsule" to provide limited protection here. I could understand it being damaged beyond repair, but the player ought to be safe.

I hadn't thought of caves either, but I do enjoy flying around on the jetpack during a meteor storm.
That's the point. It DOES provide LIMITED protection. Meteors are a powerful element, and a direct or very close hit should vaporize it. Lightning is different. I've only witnessed partial damage to the capsule, but none to me. I wouldn't play this if it became unrealistically easy.
