Leaving the post

I´m just finished the tutorial, but I don´t know if I need to wait until a specific day to leave the post to buy/sell stuff, taking prisoners away, etc... or I can do it at any moment.
I was wandering around and "the voice" was already pushing me to go to work.

You can do everything at once, I usually:
1. Go to prison camp.
2. Go buy tools (if needed)
3. Go drop off contraband at the Police Outpost.

Note: You should finish your day first (process all the visitors). Otherwise, the game will heavily suggest that you stick around until shift is complete.
