I'm so confused...
Few questions before I even consider this:
What language is "Polizka" in?
I speak Polish, Russian, Czech. I have relatively fair idea of Hungarian and Romanian.
I spent some time on deployment in Kosovo few decades ago and I cannot for the love of my wife recall a "Polizka". Not even phonetically written Grazdanka (Russian Cyrillic) name.
Help me out here, what am I missing?
Also, I grew up in the 80's behind the iron curtain, and first: There was no police there only militia as most public services were militarised (or uniformed, as they called it) and second, it was the military (border guard, if you like) that controlled the border crossings in all soviet republics and satellite states, not police.
Did developers just made stuff up without even doing a basic google search for the situation in the region back there?
Or this is based on that one obscure country I am not aware of?

"Polizka" is Bulgarian and means "lick". At least according to google translate. Could imagine that the devs had some kind of wordplay with "leak" in mind, since a border guard could be "a leak" into the country. Or its just a fantasy name just like the country itself.
But coming back to your fist question. i have no idea if the npcs in the game talk russian, bulgarian or something else. There are subtitles tho..

Game does not take place in soviet union. Its a fantasy country called Acaristan. So, yes. Devs "made stuff up". Just like you do when making games..

its not bulgarian.
if it is, its a very weird form of "lick", in past tense.
bulgarians have invented, the so called cyrillic alphabet. It would not be written, with latin.
if you write the word for female citizen, in the op, with monkey text, it will be grajdanka.

for me, polizka sound like, something a polish can come up with 😁

i too think, that this is made up stuff, just like СОИТЯАбАИD, in the game's logo.

...i see some other made up stuff, like the license plates and poppy flowers high in the misty pine mountain.
"i miss the poppies. they were everywhere back in the good old communist days"

It's a fictional country based on a mix of many countries.

It is a game.
It's a fictional country and we created a fictional language for it.

First, thanks for all the replies. I was genuinely curious :)

Re: Polish making up the word, That does not have a Polish twang to it at all, I would more likely blame it on Pepiki (Czech people), their language is more akin to how that sounds, for me anyway.

Re: the poppies, I do remember them growing everywhere, especially around railway tracks. I was told by my dad this was because it was illegal to grow poppies, so drug makers were just tossing seeds everywhere as it was hard to police those illegal "plantations", and nobody really cared.
As long as you could avoid the railway police, just go and pick them.
I'm not sure if the story is true, but I do remember seeing them everywhere.

I'm curious, what went into designing this language? Did you mix/base words from real life languages? Gotta say it was one of the immediate things that caught my attention watching this game.

According to google translate, it means police in german. I don't know if it was intended to be that though.

I'm pretty impressed about the fictional language. I wonder if it was hard to do it. Like I can speak like some fictional Chinese or African like made up language rather easily, but no way I could do any eastern European language.

I agree that it's sad that the police controls the border. Only the military did it, or some sort of militia... Even today, border control is not made by the police, but a branch of the military. But well, even if I would have liked more "realism", it's still fun !

Cyrillic alphabet was NOT invented by Bulgarians... St Cyrill and St Methodius were Greek Saints and missionaries who were sent by the emperor of Easter Roman Empire (Byzantine) Michael III in 862 AD to Balkans, to spread the Christianity.

To achieve their mission and deliver a Christian written Liturgy, they invented an alphabet as Bulgarians didn't have one. That was the Glagolitic alphabet which was very complicated. Then, they came up with the Cyrillic alphabet which is based on the Greek alphabet (mainly Greek letters and some Glagolitic). Their students Klemes and Naoum helped to spread it, which now is used in the Slavic countries (Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, etc).

They weren't the "military", as in they weren't part of the regular armed forces, and wouldn't join in on the front lines in a conflict (though they would likely be used to guard rear areas). They were more "militarised" than other nations equivalent services perhaps - but they were still primarily border security/police, and functioned in a similar manner to what other countries would call "police".

So IMO calling them "police" isn't really detracting from "realism". Sending border guards on missions against heavily armed gangs by themselves on the other hand...
