I'm not going to claim I'm anything like perfect with liveries, but it's mostly a mixture of using UV layouts (which either the model maker needs to provide, or you'll need to have access to the model files, themselves, to be able to create the UV layout, yourself, in Blender) as a layer that can be added/removed or toggled on/off, and simple trial and error.
Tracking down good railroad fonts is helpful, as well.
Don't worry, too much, about it being perfect, even if you're fully intending to upload it. Make it for yourself. If it's good enough for your own taste, that's all that actually matters.
