Long version(spoilers):
Hugo will have to see a lot of things, way too far from what Amicia can control and I think that's part of the theme of the game. Actually Amicia failed in the end, which makes for the climax of the game, where Hugo believes lying is more unforgivable than having to see the miserable truth. Amicia kind of feels that herself amid her fevered dream, yet she insists on the overprotective method - to keep lying, which is heartrending to me.
Yes this sounds like some failed attempt where there should be an achievement or something if we can actually prevent that. So can we? Unfortunately the piggy is the only meat source available nearby(apart from the horse) and Lucas has to reach the lab before he can use or teach Amicia any alchemy stuff, plus do you really want to kill the piggy yourself in front of Hugo even if you have the means to do that?
Yeah a child's attention is easily diverted. Maybe he still remembers, but he doesn't care as long as he has other stuff to do. Well not in the case of mommy of course, which is certainly most important to him.
I guess a piggy will have to choose, get one bite, be infected with the black plague then die a slow and painful death, or be devoured by rat swarms and actually pave the way for our young heroes and be contributive.
Either way they can never think of surviving as no one or nothing is able to protect them, except perhaps Lady Luck. As for this case, Laurentius' farm will soon be overrun by rats anyway, so...yeah.
I think we all felt super bad when we reached this part.
