[ToCS2] Difficulty/Balance mod
I have finally completed a mod that I made for fun. As the title says, it will adjust the difficulty/balance of the game. I do hope that it will make the game more challenging for some of you.

Changelog: https://pastebin.com/73insYgK (also included in the download).

I recommend playing the mod on Nightmare (or Hard) with minimal carryover (max bond points/notebook), or a fresh new game for the best results.

To download:
https://imgur.com/a/ymhN3f8

Alternatively, you can go to the Falcom subreddit Discord server and find it there as well.

Install instructions:
Copy the table (.tbl) files to your "Trails of Cold Steel II\data\text\dat_us" folder, overwriting any files that it asks.

Thanks to -Eppy37- and Val the Moofia Boss on Discord for helping with the testing.

Oh there's definitely a big difference for AP fights, it's just that I had always gimped myself to begin with on most of my playthroughs so it's not as huge for me. You did Aidios' work with this mod. Now we can all stop holding back.

I am at Isra-Zamiel. I remember him being very difficult on vanilla and had to nuke him.
I'm not sure how to deal with him in the mod seeing how he is so fast, even casting Grail Burst to troll me.

I would say the boss is probably borderline tedious (if not outright tedious). I used an arts based team mixed with a decent amount of speed and it was basically a very slow grind to kill it. The most important thing is to keep at least 1 or 2 people with clock up. Having a tank can help a lot as well, but probably not required (depending on your setup/positioning).

I can guarantee that it is killable at least, it was the only time I ever fought this boss as well.

Yea, I will try doing it later, cuz I don't have the patience. One nice thing though, is that he will stop using Guard/Reflect after certian threshhold.

I need a lot of EP restoring items (or have Machias use his EP Link Support ability and tank at the same time), to be able to endure the fight. and he is smart enough to choose multiple targets over the single closer tank, so I can't group my casters together for AoE buffs.

And let's not forget that he will restore his HP at certain points. Also if he casts Lost Eden after he stacks his guard/reflect you won't have time to react to ti.

The installation process is the same as the mod just replace this modified Bison patched .tbl on top of the other Bison patched .tbl that you have

I made a quick custom edit. Keep in mind this will only apply to Nightmare mode. HP modifier should be 2x, all other stat modifiers should be the same as the mod. Let me know if there are any issues with this specific edit. I probably won't make too many custom edits, other users here can feel free to make their own edits and such.

So after finding ToCS1 way too easy (as soon as I figured out AT Delay was stupidly powerful), I figured i'd try this mod for my ToCS2 playthrough.

Just finished that playthrough, and it certainly was a lot harder than ToCS1, and I mean that in a good way (mostly).

Early game felt really punishing until you could get your hands on some +speed quartz/accessories. Around the point I got Action 2 Quartz on all my team the combat stopped feeling like the enemy was constantly getting 2 turns for everyone 1 of mine. Difficulty seem to drop off massively nearing the end of the game though, and my main strategy basically became buff Rean, make Rean use Spirit Unification and spam every source of CP gain onto Rean possible, while spamming Arcane Flame Dragon (or whatever that move was called).

I did run into a few difficulty problems, which I assume were me just playing badly or missing the easy strategy:

- I could not beat the first Prologue boss without using DLC healing items. I simply couldnt figure out how it was possible to do so. Boss has 36k health, and I need to get it to 12k before the fight ends. I was hitting for 1k damage on normal strikes and like 1.5-1.8k for crafts. Considering the boss was hitting ME for 1.5k, and taking upto two turns in a row, and my non-DLC healing options were Tear/Tear Balm (healing for 1.5k when I get hit for 1.5k damage aka useless), 5 Teara Balms (3k healing) and a Zeram Powder, I gave up and just used a bunch of Tear All Balms.

-Divine Knight battles felt really tedious. I don't know how they're supposed to play out without the mod, but with it, most of my actions were basically hit the weak spot with normal strikes, save CP for Morning Moon because it will keep me from dying, and use all my Link Partner turns healing my Divine Knight (or charging up so I can heal myself more). All the other crafts felt useless compared to Morning Moon, and for my link partner, I never seemed to have any free turns to do anything BUT heal. Buffing my own Divine Knight never really worked because I couldnt roll the buffs, debuffing enemy knights felt useless because it never lasted long and they took 2-3 turns in a row so they were never really permanently debuffed.

-After smashing basically every other encounter with minimal difficulty upon reaching Act 4 or so, I could not figure out how to deal with the McBurn fight and the Crow/Vita fight in Infernal Castle. At some point during the fight they both basically used some Craft/S-Craft that basically just wiped my entire party. Phys Immune, Magic Reflect, or Defense buffs didnt seem to do anything since the attacks just cancelled all my buffs anyway. I sort of just wanted to see the end of the game at that point and I was sort of being stubborn by just retrying the fights over and over rather reloading a save and trying a different arts/equipment loadout, but the final strategy I ended up using was basically 'guessing' when they were about to use the 'wipe entire party' move and having Fie use her Stealth craft over and over to survive it and slowly reviving the entire party with Zeram Powder/Capsules from the DLC packs. In retrospect, having a character using the Angel Master Quartz/Seraphic Ring would have been a much more effective wipe recovery than trying to revive everyone one by one using items, but I never said I was smart. I managed to beat basically every boss battle following those two in 1-2 attempts in comparison.

Thanks for making the mod though, it was nice having to actually consider my strategy occasionally rather than just walking over every encounter.

The early game will always feel more difficult due to lack of options/skills available to the player, and after clearing the initial hurdle of prologue/chapter 1 (or 2), then it starts to feel a bit more "balanced".

- The Prologue boss is fairly challenging given your options, since it requires you to stay on the offense as much as possible while having just enough healing to prevent death. I don't remember the exact strategy I used, but it's important to maintain your STR buffs at least, especially before S-Craft.

- Divine Knight battles are certainly a bit tedious in the later battles since after a certain point in the game, they basically give them super short delay or something. Even in the vanilla game they will string out multiple skills after another. I probably could have done some stat tweaking for DK battles, but at the same time I found it somewhat fun to be on the defensive/trying to find ways to avoid their onslaught of attacks too.

- As for late game in Infernal Castle, I will admit that the most difficult encounter for me was Bleublanc/Duvalie, mostly because of the amount of enemies there plus their combined skills. Dealing with enemy S-Crafts mostly relies on preparation ahead of time. I would say having one person with Seraphic Ring as a party recovery character (they must be setup to tank S-Crafts) is more or less mandatory.

I spoilered some methods for dealing with S-Crafts just incase.
There are a few ways to deal with S-Crafts:
1. As you already mentioned, Fie with stealth works as long as you can get a feel for when a S-Craft will happen.

2. Angel Master Quartz - this basically guarantees survival twice at level 5, however this also means you must be able to end the encounter before the third time if you have no other way to ensure survival.

3. Iron Master Quartz - I found this to be the MVP for the late game because it allows you to eat almost anything the game throws at you (except for Lost Arts) and still be standing. Just slap on a couple extra hp quartz for a good measure + Seraphic Ring (make sure they have some speed too).

4. Perfect Guard - this only works for bosses that don't have ALL CANCEL S-Crafts, but it can be useful for warding off other strong attacks that aren't S-Crafts.

5. A lesser strategy that I believe one player has mentioned; Rean's Spiritual Unification prevents him from being ALL CANCEL so you can use that to your advantage to effectively "tank" a S-Craft with the right preparations.

Hi, thanks for the awesome mod. I want the percentage value of S-crafts and Arts to be a bit stronger(ex. SS 180% -> 200%). Could you tell me how I can edit your file? Do you have plans of making another balance mod which is a bit less difficult?

I do not have any plans to make another CS2 mod, however this mod does support both Hard and Nightmare difficulties. Hard mode should be a significant step down from Nightmare at least.

As for editing the S-crafts and arts, there should be a download file that contains my table notes. The one that contains the S-crafts and arts is the "magic table structure.txt" file. That file contains the full list of every ability that I have modified. You'll need a hex editor like HxD to make changes to the appropriate table file ("t_magic.tbl" in this case).

I probably won't be able to explain how to make changes in detail, but hopefully my notes should be a decent starting point.

yea iron MQ is a total brokeback. Its gotta be the best master quartz in game judging by power level. It doesnt really pay off due to low difficulty but on paper its best. Which is pretty amazing for basic MQ.
