Alternatively, you can go with a Timelord Machias build and try to deal as much damage as possible to the boss before he makes his first move.
Make sure that Machias has the lowest speed start of the group, so when you enter battle the other three characters will be able to act before Machias' turn comes. Make sure that those three other characters can cast Chrono Burst. Have the Glimmering Star Gem equipped on Machias so he can cast the Lost Art, Grail Burst. Enter the party in tight formation and at the front of the formation grid. Go in with two Overdrive charges.
First character's turn: cast Chrono Burst, giving them two more turns. Buff or attack. Buff or attack. Repeat for the next two characters.
On Machias' turn: cast Grail Burst. Buff or attack. On his last turn, use Burst Shot on the party.
Your characters should have enough EP to cast Chrono Burst a second time. For the first two characters, cast Chrono Burst, giving them two more turns. Buff or attack. Buff or attack. Repeat for the next character.
For the last character, cast Chrono Burst. Buff or attack. Link with Machias. Enter Overdrive. Buff or Attack. On Machias' turn, have him cast burst shot on the rest of the party.
First character buffs or attack. Second character links with Machias. Enter Overdrive. Buff or Attack. On Machias' turn, have him cast burst shot on the rest of the party.
Do whatever.
You get twenty turns to buff or attack before the boss can make a move.
My party was Rean (Tauros 4), Laura (Vermillion 4), Jusis, and Emma (Criminal 4), with Alisa and Elliot in reserve.
Obviously have everyone at 200 CP and with 2 Overdrive gauges. Emma should have Sol Eruption as a Lost Art. Have some +25-50% ATS for X turns foods, and maybe some +50% ATS for one turn foods as well.
Noble Command + Motivate to get STR up to 50%, then have Laura use Overdrive on her turn to S-Craft while there's a damage bonus. Laura's partner feeds her a Zeram Capsule to fully restore her CP back to 200, then Laura S-Crafts again. There's no reason to NOT use the Zeram Capsule, this is the hardest boss in the game anyway.
On Emma's turn, Overdrive again immediately. Eat something to get her +ATS up to +50%, then have Jusis use his S-Craft, then Emma casts Sol Eruption. After Overdrive ends, Emma and Rean should still have both 200 CP S-Crafts ready and still be buffed to +50% ATS/STR respectively. Have them both blow their S-Crafts and that should finish the boss off.
If not, Alisa and Elliot are both in reserve with their 200 CP S-Crafts (this is what the +50% ATS for one turn foods are for), but you really should not need them, the boss should already be dead.
This worked for me with a party level 114-118, so it should work for you.
EDIT: Here's a video example of this strategy (also posted below).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMKTs3ZDiRA
Basically what you do is to:
Have Rean, Fie , Jusis and Alisa.
Stack +delay quartz on Rean, Fie and Jusis on top of stacking up them with speed.
Give Alisa 2 gladiator belt items.
Start delaying him with your delay characters and have alisa use her heavenly bliss on them for CP regen. Also use Jusis' noble command to buff your characters in terms of attack so that the boss dies faster.
I thought of this boss as hard at first too thinking that they must have designed a really powerful super boss for the game but the moment I thought of delaying him, I won. One of the many reasons why this game's difficulty (on nightmare mode) should have been much harder.
Btw this delay strat works on all of the cryptid fights, the enforcer fights, the jeagers and even McBurn though he will get one S-Craft since its kinda scripted. After a certain point he will stop getting delayed until he does his S-Craft once but after that you can delay him again.
Honestly this boss is boring than anything. You can also do a S-Craft nuke strat but that requires you to have a lot of STR and Rean doesn't get his final S-Craft until the capital part meaning you can't nuke him as easily. You can however one shot vermillion on nightmare mode even without grinding.

Every boss is like that sadly. CS games are not really well balamced. They are super easy to break especially the ones in cs2 due to all the stacking and nuking you can do.
For your next encounter with Vermillion do this and prepare to drop your jaw. Give rean best of the best str increasing quartz (and whatever the attack doubling and critic giving quartz) and equipment. Also give him brave or Tauros (both should work). Go spirit unison and use a good item to Max your cp.
You should do about 314k dmg killing Vermillion.
You can also delay all of the fights before Vermillion to death too.
Yeah, no kidding, I'm zooming through the Infernal Castle with the speed stacking and Delay move spamming. I remember struggling with Duvalie and Bleublanc during my first playthrough, but I did it all in one try, same with Xeno and Leonidas. I did start the Castle though at a higher level this time around though due to the generous amount of exp from Magic Knight Isra.
Yep, best approach. Its just a single player game which is pretty easy even with MASSIVE handicap. Using all broken stuff gonna result in super boring outcome imo.
No matter what you do the game is super easy which my problem. At least nightmare should make use the stuff I have and not be a "okay time to limit myself so the game is challenging".
I still think Sky 3rd and Ao no Kiseki are the best when it comes to this. Especially Ao no Kiseki. 100% max DP Nightmare mode (not a NG+ level/item/weapon carry ) run of that game REALLY requires you to put your best. And I love it.
Well you have to work with what you have. It wont be fun at all to just faceroll with absolutely no challenge, at least without using too much there are actually some cool fights.
Not gonna lie my fav fight in the first 2 Cold Steel games is C. No seriously. Evasion tank by itself is not enough to beat him thanks to his S-Craft. He can't be delayed. He has an actualy status element that he is weak against which is faint and it only lasts 1 turn. Its a really fun fight. I legit love it.
My second fav fight is, weirdly enough, the mech battle against instructor (or major at this time) Neidharth (some of these names are really hard to type). You need to be careful, have a plan and not act rashly.
Of course both of these examples on Nightmare mode, on normal they are probably too easy as well. And its not like they are hard on nightmare, far from it. Its just I need to think about what I am doing and have an actual strategy.
I usually say that McBurn is the hardest boss in the game but that is only because he has a semi scripted S-Craft which will happen if you just stick to delaying and it will nuke you BUT you can nuke him yourself, use angel, use puppet (we do have those in CS right?), delay him and then nuke him etc etc... I just say that he is the hardest due to the attack doing so much dmg and breaking your protections. In all honesty, its a very boring and cheap boss. Boring because its super easy and cheap because he relies on one attack that will f your day. That is not balanced or fun difficulty hell it ain't difficulty in general. Just a bunch of filler attacks and one major attack.
Btw I give nuking as an example because CS2 is really where its really insane. Doing 314k dmg to the "final" boss of the game should not be possible on nightmare mode especially considering that boss only has 310k something hp.
His bomb mechanic was actually something "unique" for CS, zephyr bros have kinda same though easier to avoid.
The hardest fight for me was behemoth like giganto monster i think. Because i did him straight after encountering, so i was massively underleveled. It was fun though. The one in the park is kinda tough too, depending on his attacks pattern, if you dont have sleep immunity ( like i did ).
Only fights where i got K.O.ed were that mecha samurai ( he oneshotted me with insta-death attack because i kept toying with him ) and C+Vita. I managed to survive their linked s-crafts but C killed my emma twice with insta-death card, because she was the only one who hadnt antiKO accessory lol.
I did 300k s-craft with rean too, only once just to check it. I knew about domination s-craft combo since first game, its not that "hidden". And rean also get beast form in second. In first it at least was capped to 99999.
And as i said before you easily survive mcburn s-craft with lost art. And hes pretty fun when you fight him without cheesing.
