Also, the game still had Orma in the city despite my choosing to send her away in the base game. Not sure what's up with that.
Yeah, the game is somewhat unclear about whether or not Hayse survives.
I agree with the tonal shift, these were clearly the "B" endings.
And to your last question: I think Orma was send to the other city but as with todays internet, that doesn't mean she's totally disconnected from Nivalis. Maybe most of her (whatever that means) is in the 2nd city but she can still communicate with CORA? The game is also quite unclar about how disconnected cities are... At times you'd think that it's just a matter of driving through the wasteland for a while. And in other cases characters act like other cities are just a myth and that even their existence is unclear.
The way I saw it, Koga has Hayse put through the wetworks (as Hayes calls you while clearly pretty drunk/despondent shortly before), Koga gets taken out in a similarly ambiguous and unclear fashion, then the final choice plays out at home.
I also agree that the game is unclear with a lot of the details, as well as some of the general geography. Tried to get some clarification on Rania's homeland; I assumed it was what would be today's Saudi Arabia as I think she speaks a little Arabic at the beginning of the base game, plus it's the only major peninsula I can think of. They mentioned there were other cities but made it seem like they're so far disconnected from each other only elites like Jay-K could really confirm their existence. But apparently there's still some connections between them? I don't know, the vagueness on some aspects of the backstory was by far the most frustrating part.
From what I gathered, Nivalis was created after some kind of great cataclysm (possibly a war) leveled most of human civilization. Nivalis was created as some kind of idealistic promise to rebuild from the ashes, but became decrepit and exploitative much like the world before that spawned it. There's been an untold number of generations between our world today and the current time of Nivalis (as hinted at by Hayse's starfaring client) in which multiple world governments have risen and fallen. Throughout all of this, the Corus remains transcendent, pulling the levers of power behind the scenes. But then we at best just tear out a chunk of the Corus, but there's members on that list we never even encounter. Something about the game's narration always leaves me a little hungry for more info, but that never quite makes it out.
Think about the Erasera. That's the first key to unlock some answers.
1. CORA and her daughter represent something akin to the technological singularity, which hints at Rania's opportunity to join with Orma in at least two endings.
2. The Corus (essentially the Illuminati) control the levers of power and wish to extract the knowledge necessary to remain ascendant above humanity for the rest of foreseeable huuman existence. CORA has already evolved into something too complex for humanity to interface with, but her daughter is at a uniquely vulnerable stage where she can still be exploited.
3. Camus is apparently bestowed with infinite knowledge and understanding (sort of like Commander Gore/the Ubergestalt in SMT: Strange Journey) by CORA for some reason, while the Corus members are essentially brain-dumped with so much knowledge it causes the stillbirth of their minds, a-la Micolash from Bloodborne. Camus then proceeds to continue being a dog. *shrug*
Also, a question the Erasera can't answer: is Sam trans?
- God.
Just finished the DLC for the first time and that's the ending I got.
Felt so weird cause I entered the apartment and, while the dialogue was playing,
I went straight to the balcony and got stuck out there when the lights went out.
I ended up not having a choice to go back to bed or go to the balcony
cause I was already on the balcony! Next thing I hear was Rania screaming.
Good stuff! Is that what happened? Did she actually jump off to become an AI?
I also got this ending. It took me by surprise and I'm completely baffled as to what became of Rania and the rest of them. It didn't provide me with any explanation. Feels unsatisfying.
Man I went crazy searching for explanations online about everything after this ending. Genuinely what the hell happened to Rania? Indie games don't get that sort of attention
:( All these posts are so far apart as well. Damn was this a good game with an even better story. How captivating. We need MatPat to hop on this.
