do you say this because the airship could avoid encounters? that logic would make no sense as you can buy an item that lets you avoid encounters, right out the door. you literally could get this item right at the beginning of the game (at least in the mobile version anyway)
with this item, you can just walk across the map with impunity
are you saying that the airship would undermine the value of the boat because once you get the airship, you don't need the boat anymore?
but that logic is flawed as well, since pretty much every rpg has an airship.
rpgs almost always follow the same basic formula.
you start off on foot, very little is open to you, you have to follow a linear path
you do some stuff, more of the world opens. maybe get a land vehicle or horses or something
then you get a boat, more world opens, but still most of it is closed, due to being confined in an inner sea with shoals blocking you from landing the boat on most shores, or some gate to the outer sea being closed or something
later, you find a way to access the larger ocean and most of the world becomes available, but still not all of it, because again, shoals or mountains blocking many shores.
then, finally, you find an airship and can go pretty much anywhere, but by that time, it's okay because the boat has served its purpose.
putting an airship into the late game does no undermine the boat at all!
you only logical reason for the game not to have an airship is like you said above, the game is small enough that it isn't technically needed. which I can respect, but an airship would still have been a welcome addition regardless.
it would have opened up more options for the designers as well, to prevent access to certain parts of the map until you get the airship.
it has ads, but that is easy to play around that.
i see this version costs $9.99, while the mobile version is free with ads, or you can pay $8.99to remove the ads (but you don't even need to do that. . .)
you can earn DRP points through encounters, 1 point at a time and then trade them in for a ring that lets you walk through the world with zero encounters.
so the argument that an airship nullifying encounters ruining the challenge has no logic in the version I am playing , since you can literally buy this ring right at the start of the game if you grind out the easy encounters in the first couple of zones. (or do a microtransaction and buy DRP points, which I don't see why someone would do this, just pointing it out as an option)
the dream fragments can also be farmed in this way by buying them with DRP points, but the dream fragments are also not really necessary
since once you unlock the chevalier job and master it, you can farm small crystals easily which can be traded for the stat fragments
and besides even without all that what I just said, you can run from enemies with automatic success, so all the dream fragments can be found easily, even while underleveled, just running from the encounters as long as you don't get surprised, which shouldn't be a big deal if your main team dies, because then you just swap to another team then run away anyway. being able to run from every encounter nullifies the challenge of the encounters regardless.
and you can save the game anywhere so it's not even a big deal if you die because you can reload the save.
so all an airship would do is allow the player to more quickly revisit areas and move around the map more easily
I don't think an airship would break the game
also, every Dragon Quest game in the main series, except the first 2 games, starting with part 3 had some sort of flying vehicle, a balloon, a flying carpet, a flying bed, a floating island etc. . .
also, most games that have a flying vehicle only allow the vehicle to land on open plains, so all they have to do is put trees, mountains, hills etc, to impede the flying vehicle
as a matter of fact, most of the hidden dream fragments are already hidden in areas with lots of trees, hills or swamps, so a redesign would be minimal.
I also realize this game is already 4 years old, and kemco crapped out like, a dozen of these over the last couple of years so I know they are not going to go back and do a patch or anything and I don't expect them to.
I am merely weighing my opinion on the whole airship and lack thereof
