I went back to beginner area after I was killed by one of the bosses at second area I could not win.
skillwise I would consider reloading, sprinter (or jogger), toughness, one or two weapon skills, and medic essential. things like body/headshot dmg, mutated/infected dmg, thick skin/immunity, and marksman/quickshot are all rather nice to build into what you need too.
personally I like to have a melee and a ranged, so i can save a ton of ammo and only shoot larger groups, bosses, and tendril infected. as far as whats good, there's pretty great options for any weapon type, but many are not exactly cheap, earlier game, or cheap to use. so i'll answer for a new and growing player.
if you want to be as cheap as possible, pistols or rifles are good, shotguns can be very economical too if you're not magdumping the auto 12g (the auto 20g is cheap to spam with)
I don't really feel the need to shoot indoors untill atleast lvl 35 areas TBH
right click attack moves you a bit more than left click and you can spin a 180 as you attack to hit and move away in the same action, and you can abuse the ♥♥♥♥ out of going through doors to reset all the zombies (dead will stay dead, spawned extras poof, and the ambient remaining will reset aggro and position, so you can just leave room and go back in to unclump them for safety)
depending how much of your lootmoney you want to burn/invest in killing, and how economical of a ranged weapon you use melee becomes more or less important to making money. full auto weapons for 100% of zombies will burn money fast, so using melee for anything you can saves a ton, but on the flipside a rifle nailing mostly headshots doesnt burn much cash, and melee might just slow you down without saving much money (or if you make mistakes cost you money via healing)
one of the biggest things in this game is which affixes are on gear.
inc dmg reduction
mutated/infected dmg
jog/sprint
health
inventory
head/body dmg
attack speed
all of these are great and you'll basically want as much as you can get
early game the easiest ways to make money IMO are looting hospitals and police stations since they have better loot chances for meds and ammo respectively
also, if you get the chance to partake in an outpost defense, as long as it's not far above your comfort level is a great way to get XP and a nice buff for a few hours...it's been a long time since i actually looked at the buff but it gives more XP, and i cant recall if its ammo find chance, ammo quanitity when you do find it, or both..but it's great to go loot those police stations *after* you get the buff, and it's not a bad idea to wait to turn in all the missions you've done for the day untill you have the buff (you can also get extra XP on weapons and headslot, not the worst idea to find some cheap gear thats otherwise ♥♥♥♥ to swap into for turning in missions)
As much extra Health, Healing bonus, Quick reflexes/Anti Stun and Dodge-Phase through. Resist bonuses -Incoming damage and Debuff resist skills. Thick skin, Immune system. Both skills and Gear bonuses. Kick skills is also very usefull.
I swap gear that gives more damage, speed or stealth at times. As well as the weapon types I use, according to the activity.
I usually prefer Pistol or stealth/melee most of the time. (The main bonus allways comes from the Gear)
* It is also doable with pure ranged (taking faster zeds first, staying close to doors. Blocking new entry. Enter exit after each kill if it's required. After making room to move you can take others easier) without leaning much on damage at skills but from gear.
Submachinegun and Shotgun even with Quickshot and Reload is allready decent.
Opposing my older characters, newer characters have got the most essential skills and then gear completes the rest. So I dont lean on damage skills (the gear allready gives alot) but the most essential ones for weapon skills such as Quickshot and Relaod. Marksman is good aswell. (Melee is you mean add it's speed bonus)
Attack speed and Body damage/Infected damage (also if it comes at said gear, reload bonus) is favored the most at gear bonuses by means of damage dealing skills at my characters.
My humble two cents.

Shotgun and melee is good other weapons either do little damage or are expensive.
You can maximize the amount of EXP you get from missions by equipping EXP+ gear and getting EXP+ buffs from defending outpost attacks as well as event boosts (currently the winter event is active with +100% EXP). The best way to do this is travel by car to every outpost, go inside and accept all missions from the Noticeboard, even if you think you can't clear all of them. Clear as many missions as you can, then when you're done wait for an outpost attack.
Once you defend an attack, swap to your EXP+ gear you have, then turn in all the missions you've done. You'll get tons of EXP, and it's very common to gain multiple levels each time you do this. You can also eat Survivor's Stew and other EXP+ food items to get even more EXP, just remember the cap is +300% EXP.
In terms of best skills, I would follow this skill progression as you level up to 50:
Level 1-20: Sprinter V, Looter V, Jogger V, Mule V
Level 20-25: Reloading I->II->III->IV->V
Level 25-30: A Weapon Expert Skill to V (Shotguns)
Level 30-35: Quick Shot I->II->III->IV->V
Level 35-40: Aim For The Heart I->II->III->IV->V
Level 40-45: Toughness I->II->III->IV->V
Level 45-50: Marksman I->II->III->IV->V
Shotguns are the best bang for buck early game weapon. With this build you can run missions and PZs quicker, use all guns with shotguns as your main weapon, kill zombies easy, and loot faster. Just remember to loot what you shoot, stockpile food and meds in your stash/car and then sell excess to make cash.
Skills that I would avoid are:
-Thick Skin
-Assassin
-Fast Learner
-Immune System
-Survivor
-Trucker
-Lead Magnet
-Apothecary
-Lockpicking
-Hacker
Lastly, remember the better your gears the stronger your character. Right now there's some good winter event gear you can craft at level 15 but you'll need to fight in purple zones and the special event building. If you need help my IGN is Raybrandt, add me whenever you want =)
**Thick skin & Immune system are decent skills. The elemental debuffs are much more effective and deadlier then the new gamers think.
Meanwhile adding them after level 40 even 50 is doable. (Since new max level is 60 it is faster to achieve those levels. Prestige levels after level 60 come at snail speed) So getting all other skills earlier and sacrificing some of your bank to buy/loot and carry anti debuff medications is advised.
(When these two skills are maxed , the character doesnt require any more gear bonus or medications. Opening inventory when there is zeds around and the game freezeing your character is the worst combination. Applying medications to avoid all type of debuffs every couple of minutes is a total waste of resources)
** Quick reflexes & Toughness (Health and anti stun- Incoming Stun threshhold, Stun Recovery is top important. Having more of these mean you wont die easy and wont fall in to a loop of stuttering till death. Quick reflexes with fast cooldown also lets the character perform a small leap forwards and backwards according to the direction you pick with W or S keys; avoiding the damage and phase through npcs without getting harmed.
**Medic if used at safe distance or blocked doors saves alot of cash and inventory space, boosts the heal amount of anti debuff meds aswell. Two birds with a single stone. Having more Health points from skill and gear improves the worth of the Medic skill.
*Stealth is ghost like mode, Only if the character boosts it at gear and weapon bonuses for Visibility and/Or Sneak visibility. Works best with Melee weapons that boost Stealth attack damage. Try to take one or two zeds at most, staying at safe distance where the zeds are not facing at. Move around them to stealth attack from their side and rear. After a couple of kills, get out and get back in to reset agro, if you get spotted.
Sleeping zeds at floor are very easy prey if the room is not a tiny room. The camera angle (may be other bug aswell) ruins melee weapon's hitting downwards ability. Use Kick or pistol to take out creeping zeds if they dont sleep or just leave them.
*Armorer is a fair enough skill only if it is applied to higher level armors and upgrades combined. It doesnt kick in before mid level 40s. Not much effective before level 50-60 armors.
*Kick only works best combined with dedicated gear bonus. It becomes extremely usefull and fun if you have interest in spending to the skill and gear bonuses.
*Mule skill can be your best friend. Just remember not to open inventory nearby zeds. The loop of loot/inventory freeze and UI moving randomly is a great roblem which is still not fixed.
* Looter skill. Combined with Fast Sprint, Jog and Mule skill (also Stealth, Quickreflexes, Kick if you wish to) and the Gear bonuses you can gather loot without fighting any npc and make good profit if you have decided fighting is only a secondary activity at Deadfrontier games.
**Faster Firearms are Allready OP even without any skills but the gear bonus; including the weapon bonuses. Faster Aim and Faster Bullet Spam. (Not the best for economy if you do not combine cheap ammo spam and peek a boo/ Door warrior style as told above)
Reload, Quickshot, Marksman are esential. Weapon expertise bonus is too tiny compared to these and gear bonus combined.
If you ask the most usefull firearm skill it is Reload then Quickshot. Marksman is decent at upgradingthe aiming speed (Rifles require Marksman and Rifle expert and Gear bonuses to keep the reticle allways at headshot. Rifles are good at headshots but Too expensive to spam at random body shots. Shotgun and Subm gun can dig in and spray ;pushing swarms of npcs)
Much better if you tank and dodge and one click heal at a safe distance. No waste at anti debuff medications or expensive meds. No run back and forth. No worries if you go for performance skills. Getting gimpy damage and weapon expert skills for firearms %350+ gear bonus allready vs %50 bonus from skills. As said Reload and Quickshot is worth it. Marksman as the third.
Go for strengthening the weaker side which is durability (Also carrying more than a couple of armors with good skill bonuses shines at end zones if you plan to rush brutally. Using armor at mid 40s-50s earliest/Kevlar with upgrades, Health, Anti stun, Inventory etc makes sense)
Being as tanky and dodgy as possible lets the character use any type of weapon anytime, do any type of activity at the same character as Solo.
Be it tiny rooms vs Boss end zone or Purple zones solo.
***Shotguns vs Machineguns: (Top Fast Zed cleaning instruments of Deadfrontier Games if we dont count Explosivesof DF 3D)***
When it comes to shotguns I usually prefer 10g and 12g at end zone 20 g for Spray at swarms of zeds. But 20g and 12 g spam with Spee Shotgunner builds costs alot. Melee and Pistol/Relatively cheap ammo using Submachine gun spam allready clears most of it, easily. Subm guns are seriosly OP no matter what. However Higher than .38 costs alot the long term.
Fast firing shotguns allways cost alot more but their ability to push groups of zeds and bosses is top. Dig in and burst aoe shotgun and subm guns help running PZs much faster but get ready to pay much more than you earn.
and don't personally care to use stealth.
mostly, i'd just like you to try and sell me on kick.
never really used it for anything but killing the random worm here and there (though some of my gear happens to buff it)
mostly, i'm just wondering where and why you use it?
Fast learner
Immune
Thick Skin
Jogger
Medical
Sprinter
Cheaper saving on healing.
For mid game fingers you aim at legs when shooting do not look at face and stalker you have to run back to base does not die.
Low level
Pistols with .32 ammo is super cheap CZ pistol holds more ammo
Level 5 do sheriff quest to get grave digger
Level 15 try to sell everything and afford Ice Pick axe or grind with cheap ammo
Level 30 try to get Shadow Blade expensive but worth it
Level 15 Ice Breaker clothing is super good
I would say every build needs Jogger ability
(Beware getting stuck at immobile objects inside while running around the rooms fast. Itis certain death if you are not able to log off immediately)
Door Warrior:
Also some can still pull a shoot and loot build without sneak or melee btw.
It is peek a boo shoot and leave the room and repeat untill you believe you wont get outnumbered strategy. Impossible to pull at the open map. Zeds outside keep respawning but also at the charaters back side , during the most chaotic moments.
We all dislike loading door simulator but it really helps alot for 'more brittle' ranged characters. Much safer and fail proof compared to stealth or melee. (Since there is allways a distance. It also lets spamming cheap ammo or headshot as if under stealth, especially when zombies look the other side the game counts the player character as if under stealth. Other than these this approach lets the player grab skills such as mule top of upgrades for bags. [Lets swapping gear for seperate activities aswell]
The Underestimated Debuffs:
Resist skills and health, healing is still essential for pure solo But someone can grab toughness , quick reflexes, and pass other resist skills by carrying meds for utility. Eventually getting Thickskin and Immune system helps alot the long term (Buildings such as Comer and sons are exceptional at extra debuffs which give more than %100 debuffs) if the character plays allmost allways inside the buildings and uses doors as if a barrier he can patch debuffs with medication for a very limited amount of time (zombies cant chase the player passing through doors afterall). But the trick includes loading times for each door.
Dont fear the Reaper (Not):
Beware the Scythe/Reaper zombies especially the tiny children with bone armor/explosive sacks even spawn with two scythes as arms at times (The most OP zed type that applies insane dps stun combo and sliding out of view with its tiny stature ; worse if they come from all sides) or silent adult sctyhe/reaper zombies pop up without a trace at your back ; which can trap a player with low anti stun and health to an insta death. (Reminds Leaper zombies at Deadfrontier 3D at times)
***[Sighs deeply remembering the Grenades as side weapon at DF 3D which could be thrown over walls to clear swarms...Sighs furthermore remembering Sniper rifles and Bows of DF 3D...DF 3D Skills/Stats/Professions...Personal Outposts]***
Lots of tricks to turn around differnt type of challanges by similar tactics and swapping gear, hoarding utility items and extra room for the loot a like. (Just by not opening the inventory or looting a spot when there is zombies nearby. It is not worth falling in to the loop of loot/inventory lag/UI sliding randomly.
