Well, I for example play since release (which was almost 5 years ago), and my assumption to that question would be, that it all roots in the fact that Dead Frontier is a 1-Man low-budget project.
In a logical consequence this one fact means, that:
1) there is little to no advertising, public recognition or mouth propaganda for this game, therefore it´s basically invisible for most people.
2) major updates take a veeeery long time until they publish, which frankly makes the game boring at some point and veterans will take a break inbetween the bigger updates. There are a lot of inactive players, who return from time to time. You can see the player count ramping up 3x or 4x when there are seasonal events, and the count usually is spiking when a major game update drops.
3) the game is very rough on its edges, partially very difficult and cryptic (e.g. very high learning curve), so you could say it is very beginner unfriendly, and that might just scare off a lot of Newcomers.

Theres more people online on the original Dead Frontier. Maybe some things need to change

I like it. I started playing with a friend a few weeks ago. I am advertising it among my friends but a lot of them are too scared to play horror/zombie games lol.

I quit because the quests for lvl 35-50 area are not highlighted green color. It is so hard almost impossible to quest in those high level zones when there is no direction.

its not a bad game. I played abit more regularly back when the level 60 update was close to releasing. But once i got up to the higher level areas. and started to see the eye ball zombies and all the different mutation zombies? I simply stopped, went back to the level 20 areas and vibed grinding a bit of ammo until I stopped playing.

It is quite the learning curve, and grinding gear takes a fair bit. Although I do like roaming through buildings looting stuff, so it has appeal....

Maybe i'll start playing it again to see how much its changed since last time.

i loved the feel and idea but this is true as any statment. honestly the game needed some minigames and puzzles to break up the hallways. and idk did melee ever get a bit of a improvement?

i bet melee is still rigid as it was. Still makes me laugh i had to lurn to snap my neck after making contact with a zombie just to inch backward. then repeat.

This is a fun game in short bursts, it gets kind of boring once you reach max level with decent gear since all there is to do is get money for slightly better gear that you don't really need and while this is in an abstract sense just another kind of 'leveling up' it doesn't feel as good or give you the same sense of tangible effort->reward to get a wave of satisfaction from.
Nonetheless i return to it on and off usually at least a couple times a year

It's pretty repetitive.

It's biggest problem is the repetitive map design. I'd rather see 1 small detailed town, then 8 sprawling zones with copy/pasted buildings. I still have faith in this game

long grindy same content over and over. It gets boring and people just move on to better games.
I got bored tbh, it's very grindy, and the variety of stuff to do is really lacking. I played since launch and I bet you anything if I launched the game again right now there'd be hardly any noticeable changes outside of outpost attacks and the stalker.
