I follow more all around builds, that allow you to use any weapon the game has to offer. Melee expert + marksman/quick shot + head hunter, and add on infected damage + mutated damage on your head//gloves/both weapons (and skills, if you have the room), and you'll be ready for anything.
My notes for all around build assuming level 30 (FYI, this doesn't include chainsaw usage just yet... haven't gotten my hands on one yet to see if it's worth altering my all around build):
All around build:
Head - exp/damage (inf+mut)
Shirt - inventory/hp
Gloves- exp/damage (inf+mut)
Pants - inventory/hp/jog
Feet - jog/sprint
Dodge
Sneak
Kick
Damage vs Mutated
Damage vs Infected
Sprinter 2
Quick shot 2
Marksman 3
Reloading 3
Fast learner 5
Melee expert 5
Head hunter 5
Well, from my own experience, I have used smg + melee. There are times when you have a group of zombies, like in an OA, and your clip runs out. You have to reload. Yes, you can kick, but switching to melee and taking out a mob in front of you before you reload has helped me. I also use smg + melee when I'm looting low level areas and I want to chew up some smg ammo to find other ammo.
