Shovel in Fourth Plague?

So far as I can tell, the shovel you can acquire during the fourth plague, Flies, is unused! You never need it for puzzles or achievements, and so there's no sense in solving the puzzle that unlocks it, either! Am I wrong? Can the shovel be used as an alternate puzzle solution, maybe?

I found an old (September) article with a video that shows an earlier version of the level. There, you were supposed to use the shovel to dig up the carrot (instead of getting it from Margaret in the soup pot).

Possibly, when the puzzle was changed, nobody removed the shovel and the chest.

Or maybe it's used for a secret we haven't found yet.
