It also kinda flubbed up Zero in gameplay IMO. It was a cool experimental idea and all--to have him gain abilities that were more about locomotion and general usefulness than about being a particular boss's weakness. It just ended up as this awkward thing where he has weaknesses for some bosses and not others.
But I still liked it a lot, especially as Zero. The stage design is great, and they really did a good job with Zero's story.

I actually use Shadow Armor on that level anyway. With the right parts it's doable, but it can take a lot of tries if you're not lucky.

It's true that the character is from one of the handful of animes I do like, though. Dallos was a sci-fi OVA series in the 80's taking place on the moon. Four episodes. The first two were fantastic but the last two rapidly grew less interesting. Still, I remember it fondly for the sake of those first two. The (relative) obscurity of it was part of the joke.
It's in the first level, if I'm not mistaken, of Gate's fortress. Just after the mid-level load screen, there's a platforming section that's easy with a character who can air dash (Falcon Armor, Blade Armor, Zero) but very difficult with one that can't (X, Shadow Armor).

A lot of plot holes in the story which the game mixes both the good and bad endings in X5 which causes lots of story problems
Problematic artificial difficulty especially from most level designs
