In this collection, when the game shows you a Pass Word sequence, just press the "S" key on your keyboard (or "Y" button on Xbox controller) to save this numeric sequence. When you exit the game and go play it again, just acess the Pass Word option from the main menu of the games (where it shows Game Start and Options Mode), press "S" again and it will ask you to load your last Pass Word.
So once you beat the 8 bosses and move onto the fortress, you have to finish the rest of the game in one session. It won't save your progress.
Especially in the NES days. I don't know if it was their password system not being able to handle it, or they wanted to maximize the challenge.
Thankfully, starting in X4, they finally got rid of that nonsense, and started saving progress all the way.
The Classic games likewise started saving all progress in Powered Up and MM11.
