That said there are items that you can sell back regardless of rarity because they just aren't useful regardless. The Soldier's sword comes to mind if I recall the name correctly--you only ever get one but even a lowly bronze sword +3 outclasses it. But it you want to play safe, just don;t sell anything the game warns you not to. And in my experience, never sell crafting materials.
equip your best armor for each character
use any stat buffing items on the character of your choice.
give characters any healing items you may want (you can get by fine without them though.)
sell everything that doesn't give you the prompt about how you can't buy it back.
unless you plan to do some crafting, in that case keep any metal you have to
