Report a translation problem
Mostly comes off boring when I compare it to the excellent DQV and DQVIII.
I'm playing it on hard and I still find it fairly easy. I guess for me it's just a lack of immersion. It's not even that the story itself is boring. If this were a novel I might find it interesting. I think the problem is that the world feels (to me, anyway) very, very small. And the "cities" feel like tiny villages inhabited by about 20 people living in 5 houses and 2 shops.
I am getting the same kind of "meh" vibe I got from Ni No Kuni II: another game where the consequences of the story seem almost laughable because of how little there is to the world.
Why can't they create the illusion that the world is bigger? They could keep the world the same size but use backgrounds or something to make the cities look like real, actual cities.
Like what Final Fantasy XII did. Have randomly spawning people walk back and forth through the streets to make it seem like this is a real place with real people. Not just 2 shopkeepers and 5 citizens.
This game feels really old school in that other than a few skill points to use on a handful of skills, there's not a whole lot of "next" at play here. You just "level up" like in old RPGs. Get a few pieces of equipment that don't even show when you change the armor. Have a few bumps of stats.
It just all comes across as outdated and boring, I guess. The combat is not fun enough to NOT have some kind of incentive to keep doing it. Something clear to work towards in terms of progression.
I want to agree with you on every point you made. I dont know what the h*** is going on, but it seems to me its just you and me who feels this game is a major disappointment.
This game is as dull as it gets...
-Repetitive music.
-Very slow story.
-Ok characters if not forgettable. (except Sylv... poor Sylv)
-Boring skill tree with marginal upgrades.
-Boring overworld (boring world actually... all towns and cities have little to no outstanding characteristic.
-Repetitive town folks, repetitive monsters.
One of the most boring games I've played in a while... Im just gonna go back to playing VIII

-generic looking by choice really
-Classic simple battle system
It's not everyone cup of tea, I only got into dragon quest like 5 years ago, I'm 26 and always played JRPG a lot. Always found them too simplistic until I got into it with DQ 9 on DS.
How much you advanced in the story? Happened to me too but only at beginning because its a very "slow burn" story. I had 0 immersion on it until aprox the half of the game, when you reach that point, you can't stop playing.
Spawk you too. Glad to see im not the only scratching my head. That is a very good point... typically if a game is rewarding in one way or another one has incentive to keep going, but this game is neither rewarding in character progression or story.
I really dont understand how people could see this is their new favorite DQ game. It makes no sense to me. This game is actually shallow by comparison of the past games, it lacks details in many places.

Only thing I can attribute that to is maybe Age? This game is a throwback to the JRPGs that I played as a kid in the 90s.
The character progression is fine for me, everyone doesnt need earth shattering realisations to be interesting. Some people are just who they are because its who they are. Like, ya know, people.
The combat is fairly simple, but thats not a bad thing. Complexity for complexitys sake isnt interesting, and only limits the fun to be had. Options are only options if they are all viable. This game keeps those options all viable by narrowing the uses of each skill to a specific use.
As for the plot? Its a throwback to the 90s era JRPGs. Not everything needs to be 1,000 layers of an onion. The plot reveals itself in the first hour, and you have at it. Convoluted plot stories (like in 90% of RPGs today) do nothing for those games. Bad Guy is Bad because Bad Guy wants to kill/destroy things. No need to get into the ethics of why, the motivation, all that detracts from anything interesting.
LOL Whos talking about complex story and complex game mechanics. Dragon Quest XI is shallow, boring and uninteresting compared to the past entries. The past Dragon Quest games were so simple it and genuinely crafted that it showed. It showed in its writting, humor, its character and world details. XI has no such things, and its unfortunate that most cant see that. Pretty graphics and "quality of life" upgrades is not what the DQ series is about.
Its characters are plenty complex, aside the MC. The previous DQ games were simple, yes. Just as this one is. The writing is fine, its on par with what you expect in a DQ game. Dont think so? Load up whatever other DQ games you have and go play them again. I highly doubt you will see it as better.
As for talking about the looks and quality of life upgrades? Dont think anyone has mentioned that here, so its a nullpoint.
