Sewers and Black Dragon

Was enjoying the game until here. No matter what I do I cannot flee the dragon. I hold the shift key and get to the end of the corridor and the toon just stops, the dragon roars, and I'm back in the room with the dragon again. I've tried using a controller and the same thing happens. He just stops moving at all.

In youtube videos I've watched this does not seem to happen. So what am I doing wrong?

It is supposed to be an easy level. Just avoid the rocks that's it.
