I am still getting this game. But Koichi Sugiyama is a bigot and Square Enix should distance themselves from him.
I just want to say, I am a huge Dragon Quest fan, and a fan of Square Enix's work in general. I grew up on Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games, think Chrono Trigger is possibly the best RPG ever created, and was introduce to the genre Dragon Quest created was "Final Fantasy II"(Final Fantasy IV) on the Super Nintendo, years before I was even a teenager, that had such an impact on me, that it immediately feel love with the genre, and it let to be playing Earthbound, Final Fantasy III(VI), Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and Dragon Warrior not long after. I became a lifelong fan of games like Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest, before Final Fantasy VII came out. Before I had even entered Junior High.

I am really looking forward to this game. And of Dragon Quest, the definitive Japanese RPG, finally being available on PC. Dragon Quest is ever so important, has never lost sight of what it is as a series, hasn't felt any need to reinvent intself and turn itself into something it is not. And is the most import Japanese RPG series, Tales, Final Fantasy, none of these RPG series would exist if Dragon Quest had not created the light RPG genre. Final Fantasy is, in many ways, a Dragon Quest clone. Dragon Quest is not only a fantastic series of impeccable quality, but JRPG would not exist without it. Dragon Quest deserves all respect and praise possible. My favourite video game genre does not exist without Dragon Quest. And the games are simply fantastic.

To say that PC finally getting Dragon Quest is monumental would be an understatement. No superlative is enough to describe this series.

Unfortunately, saying this here is probably the opposite of preaching to the choir. As the last of moderation on Steam has allowed alt-right views to become normalized on the Steam community. Trolls and the go to political ideology of trolls is depressingly common here. Not going to pretend this isn't a huge problem.

Sugiyama doesn't view people like me as having basic humanity or being deserving of the same rights. Honestly, it makes me ever so sad as such a long time fan of both Enix and Square games. That one of their most prominent people is against me and people like me.

Koichi Sugiyama makes truly amazing music. He is also a racist and a homophobe. Like the Richard Wagner of Japanese RPGs or something like that.

Richard Wagner has made some of the best musics of all time, and even today we still use his music for weddings. The famous bridal chorus. He lived in the 1800, ofc he was a racist- who wasnt? He was anti semitic as well, but back then, who wasnt? Now im gonna assume Koichi Sugiyama is another denier of Japanese war crimes, like the mass rape, unit 731 which conducted biological experiments etc- right?!
yeah, thats pretty horrible but guess what? I dont care. There is people I know who thought 9/11 was an inside job, thats insane, and to blame it on the americans/♥♥♥♥ cheney etc while letting Bin Ladin off the hook is disgusting. But if you believe in crazy things, you believe in crazy things, they might not do that because of hatred but because they are too shocked and horrified of what really happend. This guy probably cant ever, think japanese people would do the things they did, so he has to make up some kind of fantasy about the war. Whatever. The guy is 87, my grandma is 89, she doesnt like my cousin being a lesbian - once again, she is 89 she probably wont change and im fine with that- I mean, she wont be around for much long, is it really time to fight with her at this time?! (and im sure she might be racist as well if I asked her long enough). There is gonna be things we believed in that will make us look old and angry in 60 years as well.

okay I looked into some of the things he believed in; like denial of the sexual slaves/rape and being very patriotic about the flag and national anthem and how the media is waging a war against nationalism. whatever. he has the right to think and say that, he is 87, he might not even be around for DQ 12. why attack an old man in his finale years? or distance yourself from him.
I understand but he is 87.

Luckily, not everyone his age is quite so bigoted. But it is true that culture was different and such views were far more normalized then than now.

Still, these views still reflect very poorly on Dragon Quest, Enix, and Square Enix. And isn't something Square Enix should just turn a blind eye to.
is a holocaust denier bigoted if he really believes it to be a made up event? doesnt you also have to have some kind of hate or real disgust in your heart as well?

LGB(T) crap doesn't belong in everything. What is it with people. Also transgender OR male/female, pick one, stop giving yourself labels and wanting special treatment. No man or woman gets special treatment for being their gender.

People are allowed their opinions and views, if they dislike types of people or think they shouldn't be involved it's their opinion. Stop making a scene out if nothing.

And keep this ♥♥♥♥ out of gaming.

Steam is alt-right LOL? Let me guess, you're super liberal and any opposiing view is considered "alt-right." You're part of the problem.

(sigh) Everyone on the opposite side of any political line is always racist/sexist/homophobic/other words ending in "ist" and "phobic". Alt-right and far-left are both as bad as each other. Both sides pretending to be the "morally superior" are full of crap. If a man makes great games, I don't give a damn what his political views are. He should be allowed to continue making those games. And I'll continue buying them as long as they're good. I don't have time for political BS when I'm trying to go on an adventure in a new jrpg. Miss me with that crap.

Apparently ao. People nowadays are so desperate to virtue signal and show how "good" they are that they find it impossible to just relax and mind their own damn business.

There is a lot of screaming for attention. I am supportive of a lot of things, but certain things like trans people and all that, they are un needed labels that just say I'm something made up but I want special treatment please.

You can make up anyhting nowadays, the world is stupid.

The main problem is that he owns the music of Dragon Quest. If SE gets rid of him they can't use his music anymore and that would piss of Japanese fans and it would hurt sales of future Dragon Quest games. I'm pretty sure SE wants to get rid of him but they can't. They're probably waiting for him to die or something. Not like he's going to be alive in 10 years.

@Vigi React While I agree with you, you have to admit that steam is filled with LOADS of seemingly right wing groups/tryhards just going by imagery/bio's alone. And anything that ends up being even remotely inclusive WILL spawn several disrespectful threads that will need to be locked even before anyone has actually played the game. A more left wing thread/response doesn't even need to exist in order to create the response. Again that's not representative of all of steam, but this is what a casual observer will see.

@OP If you want to make a stand then make a stand and don't buy DQ.Vote with your wallet. People may complain about it but that's the way capitalism should work. Regardless of your political ideology this has always been an option that's been available. None of us should be one of those people who believe that a course action is great only if we are the only ones allowed to use it.
If you think that the known beliefs of one man don't counteract the fact that more than one individual worked on this game then get DQ. Don't overthink your choice.

First up - I like the username, you keep being you and having fun!

Next up: Understand about the older Japanese generation... they were raised as children/grandchildren of an extremely humbled generation - who literally had to give up an empire, and had order imposed on them for decades. They have a weird relationship with culture in general. They've also seen a decline in population for decades. They've got the same kind of insecure paranoid nationalists fearing for cultural change that we've got here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHJsoCAREsg

In that background, Sugiyama is basically a pretty liberal member of his generation.

That, and he's a musician.

Play or watch some videos on Dragon Quest XI - it's actually pretty progressive for exactly the stuff you're talking about.

I think you'll really enjoy it for what it is.

Don't let some lightly-traditional old dude who doesn't have a meaningful content contribution to game mess that up too much for you.

Otherwise, there's no large project you'll ever be able to enjoy.
