Best way to deal with metal slimes?
I'm level 15 and in the desert grinding out and I get literally 1-2 hits away before they flee. Can they be affected by status effects such as sleep? Should I try using sleeper hit with Erik?

You can't really kill them early without luck. You need to be skilled up to kill them effectively.

I don't really want to add much more because that might include some spoilers.

Alright then I'll just try my luck since this spot I'm at is decent grind as is without the chance of killing metal slimes.

How much do they give btw?

2010 xp for metal slimes and 10050 xp for liquid metal slimes.

They are and always have been immune to nearly all magic and in possession of ridiculous defense, which makes most attacks deal 1 damage or miss.

The key to killing them is to use abilities that either miss or crit. They'll usually miss the metal slimes anyway, but crits are guaranteed to hit and one-shot the metal slimes.

My motto was to always level up off the monsters that spawn metal slimes with them, and think of the slimes as a nice bonus instead of the goal for each combat. You just gotta keep swinging and hope you hit them enough to kill them before they run away. Also physical damage AoE skills can hit them all. Just make sure you remember which ones get hit, and always try to do what gives you the greatest probability of killing one. (attacking the one with least health for all single target attacks).

Even healers and casters should mele them. I only ever see 1's or 2's when hitting them, never any 0's. You will have 4 attacks to every move the metal slime gets, and their health is very low (check in your beastiary, i forget exactly, but its extremely low). so if you keep at it eventually you will killl one and they give out 2k XP

Some attacks are specifically made for fighting Metal Slime type enemies, like the Sword skill Metal Slash. These will never miss against Metal Slime types, and can sometimes deal 2 damage instead of 1. Reliable options, though the stronger slimes might not stick around long enough for this to work.

Anything that does multiple hits without having an element is worth considering, as you will have more chances of hitting and possibly critting. Especially valuable if that character doesn't get some form of Metal Slash.

Anything with severe crit rate and miss rate, like Thunder Thrust, is arguably *more* accurate than your normal attacks against a Metal Slime type, and getting a hit with these is an automatic crit, which should also mean a kill.

If you don't have any of the above, your best bet is to stack Critical Chance effects and just pray your normal attacks trigger it.

Aside from that, you just gotta hope they don't run away.

You'll get a skill on a character that ensures a critical hit at the expense of a lot of MP, but it's not available for unlock until much later in the game. That skill guarantees the kill on metal slimes.
Get any metal sword skills or crit spear skills. Baring those, you can also use multi hit skills (which pair well later with a certain weapon).

Spells won't work, with the exception of one character who has an extra strong sleep pep power that even works on metal slime. Really useful for when you find a group and keeping them from running.
