Big sword
Big damage
Swish swish swoosh
10/10 Good game
build however you want, around 99 you got every specc fixed.

I would recommend going the 1h shield build though on the hero, since he is the best tank, and can fully heal party, dish out insane dmg, cure status ailiments with his sword, and if you stack up good items on him, he can basically pep up party fully using insanely OP spells- as long as he is still standing.

Serena and Rab makes for great healers, and you want a back up healer if one goes down.
You dont need extra dps- thats Jade and Erik for, mostly single DPS I would say, spear and dual sword for insane dmg.

Veronica I used on the true ending boss in my 95 hour of playing, in fact she got the last hit which wiped him, she has good AOE spells, and she can sometimes double cast which is ... superb for AOE dmg obviously, which some enemies/bosses need against, since they have multiple targets.

The 8th member is a spoiler character, but yeah... he/she has his/her own unique tree, and I would focus on them, they are very, very strong.

I'm in agreement with above except for the main char for the first half fof the game at least...

I started out with sword and shield for the first hour or 2, and then I found that the greatsword was amazing on the main char. I'm probably 60% through the ENTIRE game (I'll avoid spoilers to clarify what I mean by that) and my greatsword is killing enemies in one hit before I have a need to tank anything.

Unfortunately, I've noticed that the sword tree is still growing while I've run out of ways to grow my greatsword at my point in the game. I'm still outperforming the sword in dmg by a wide margin and loving it, but I have a feeling I'll be switching to dual swords or the tank buid mentioned above by the end of the story just because of the lack of skill growth at this point :( So to sum up, my vote is go greatsword until you want to switch to swords, since respec'ing is cheap anyways haha.

And just as an aside, I think Jade is a powerhouse with both spears and claws for different types of dmg. Spears are great for consistent dmg, and the exclusive mult-thrust is amazing for single targets. Claws double hit for lower dmg, but when they crit (and seems to crit 10-20% of the time), they're the only weapon that outperforms my greatsword in my party.

Sylvando with whips and the AE heal has worked well for me, especially in the first 1/2 of the game. The whips are great on easy enemies, and on bosses there's always buffing and healing to do.

edit: Just found out the central whip ability can even remove Pep from enemies. It's expensive but definitely worth it by the time you can afford it.

in post game content, for the true ending... bosses start to hit hard.
and that "Block" with shield can really save you sometime.
A round where you can dish out dmg instead of self heal, or save mp to just a single member instead of healing party because 2 are hurt can change A LOT.

I had that when I farmed/grinded as well, but on bosses I put on the shield on hero when needed.
