they're normally located around treasure chests for you to find

I think they appear around treasure chests etc, they seem to be around drops and then disappear when you pick them up.

They are just an indicator that something important lies here. Possibly you actually get to meet this creature later in the game.

Nope, they're just here and there, sometimes you'll see them around a treasure, a drop, sometimes not, it's random.

I've heard they had a "village" you could manage on the 3DS ver.
