Protagonist seems weak..
Compared to his party members (especially Erik) he seems incredibly underwhelming. I have to put a strength band in just to rival the damage of the others, and this is with a greatsword. Is Erik really this strong in the early game, or is there something i'm doing wrong? (note: I have been spending my skillpoints.)

That's odd, I have the opposite--hero does the most of anyone against a single enemy, whereas Erik is really low damage w/ normal attack. That said, his sleeper hit followed by the one that does 6x damage against sleeping oppononets is OP.

give him a two handed sword, dish out damage with his skills.

Apparently Greatswords is the way to go for the early game, from what I've read.

I'm 4-5 hours in and he's jsut as good, if not better than Erik.

Umm,he's a tanky paladin-ish dude who can learn some really awesome stuff later.
That's the thing: I -did- give him a greatsword. I gave him a ring of strength too. But Erik's damage is either 1 below his, or 2-3 above it in fights. Which is odd considering they have the same level. Then there's the HP difference (which might be the gold pendant i have equipped on him, should test that). Erik's got a full 20-30HP more than the lead.
So noted, i've also taken yet another look at the stats, and it turns out that Erik needs the higher HP pool, his defense will always lag behind as he's supposed to use evasion to keep ahead of the curve (which is hard to do considering it's low at the start.) I also realised..he's been using an advanced weapon in the early game which i got through crafting (divine Dagger+3). Kind of skewed things there, though now my protagonist's damage is getting nice and high with his twohanders.

I gave Erik Dual Wield ASAP and he was actually doing averagely 15 damage more than the main hero.
hitting 25-28 right hand and 12-15 left hand while hero was doing 22-26.
You gotta use the Abilities though, Flame Slash he will do about 5-10 extra.
Those are numbers at level 15 with fully up to date and +2/+3 equipment.

EDIT: Oh and Erik's attack that does extra damage against sleeping targets does about 115+15.

But yeah, as already mentioned, Erik is supposed to be a rogue (implying bursty penetrative damage) while the main hero is supposed to be a jack of all trades.

Just get your Hero dual wield too and he will be golden.

He gets dual wield? Is it the hidden skill in Swordmanship?
Lumone Sep 6, 2018 @ 1:56am
He gets it in a hidden skill when his panel expend

Seems like I'm not very far into the game yet at 15 hours then. :P
The expansion is locked behind a storyline trigger or something else?

He is typically the Hero class. Other than some differences, most DQ main Protags, will get the same abilities, typically wield swords and can use other weapons, and generally may seem Average at the start, but get really powerful later on. what throws me off this time though is, he cant use a Boomerang. But what I do love is he can Dual Wield. So now doing some sick damage with the Hero, dual wielding.

@genky And yea, 15 hours isnt very far. Specially if your playing Draconian mode. Expect to not be done with the....first ending....for at bare minimum, 60 hours, thats bare, most average around 80-100 hours, then you got the true ending which may take another 10-20 hours, depending on what it has you doing.

The Hero starts out weak and Erik outclasses him stat-wise in every way except in MP and Healing. But then the Hero's stats start getting bigger increases at level ups later.

It's to give the illusion that he's nothing without his companions/friends, and by the time you have everyone on your team his stats are going to be so all-around and great compared to their one-sided ones.
