Great Sword?
What's the point of the greatsword, when it look slike the sword you get for story purposes is a single handed sword?

Different weapons have different stats and skills.

I know that, but if the sword you get in the story, is the ultimate weapon per say. it would defeat the purpose. What I'm trying to say is, will I be wasting skill points for investing in great sword, when I would switch to 1 hand sword later?

Thanks
Greatsword seems better early game. There is even an AOE skill that only costs 4 magic, although I am not sure if I should use up all my skill seeds to get it immediately. You can always respec when you get the ultimate sword. Plus, I think there are greatswords with similar or better stats.

Sword lets you either dual wield (doing half damage with the second sword), or use a shield for a good block bonus.

Greatsword hurts more, though instead of blocking, you parry. That's good and bad. Parrying doesn't get as high a chance to work as blocking does, however you have the chance to counterattack after a parry for a free hit. The problem with parry is that once you're good and dodgy, it loses it's real bonus of the counter attack (you don't counter when you just dodge).

So one handed sword lets you either double up attacks (less damage for the second hit, but abilities like heal on hit still proc) or use a shield for a big defense boost.

Once you're at the point where you're constantly dodging, neither defensive method will matter much. Except that shields often have useful side effects.

Early on the higher bonus to base attack of greatsword (+15 vs +3), along with the ability to hit multiple enemies is pretty large. It almost seems like it was made for people to go greatsword initially, then switch to sword (two swords for normal fights, sword/shield for boss fights) later on.

Great sword does significantly more damage though, and there are no attack speed differences etc. Meanwhile, you miss out on a bit of defense from the shield, and you parry less often then you block, but it's not a huge difference (not nearly as large as the difference in damage). This is especially true if your grinding a bunch since GS can just basically destroy groups of enemies.

I thought it was part of the dlc that came with the costume of the DQVIII main character, thus making it overpowered (just check the stats).

But if it actually has its drawbacks like being unable to wield a shield, then I think it can be fair to use it and not feel you are getting any kind of advantage from it.

The strongest greatsword has 353 attack, and the strongest one handed sword has 196, so there's a pretty big power gap even with dual wield. Hero's dual wield is much worse than Erik's, the stat boosts on greatsword are much higher, and greatsword has better skills for both single-target and AoE. One handed swords are better for metal slimes, but that's about it IMO.

I played the game on 3DS last year and used greatsword the whole way. IIRC, the story sword isn't even the strongest one handed sword available at the time you get it.
When you get at bosses, the greatsword can be very handy.
You can be tanking all the damage and let the monsters focus you.
