actually that kinda looks really small if only the highlighted areas are traversable.

Yes, only the highlighted areas are traversable. The dark/gray is all impassable mountain range. However, this map doesn't show dungeons or interiors ect. I certainly wouldn't call it "small" though, it just doesn't have a bunch of big empty fields like DQ8.

As far as I can tell, the game still has ship/sea travel and theres supposed to be a way to fly around, but you have to dock and land at predetermined spots.
